Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76012464 "Atlas Shrugged" is up there too. Have you read ANTHEM by Rand? No...I try to read what are widely considered the best novels by a variety of writers, rather than devoting my limited time to one author, especially when we are talking tome-length novels like these. (Note: I read ALL of C.S. Lewis's Narnia series though, when I was a kid. Series are different.) |

Foresight (OP) User ID: 76010618 Australia 12/21/2017 09:46 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Being a sci-fi fan The Stand is my all time favorite read. Any of the Dark Tower books were well worth the time spent, tho the first 3 were especially good. Stephen King, for a liberal idiot, has a real knack for story telling. I think he is a heavy pot smoker and the weed is his muse. Thinking of books like Misery and The Shining really make me appreciate his dark, twisted ability to paint a picture in ones mind. His newer stuff seems to not pack the punch of his older stories, tho I have to admit I haven't read any of his newer stuff after say Bag of Bones. Desperation and The Regulators are some of the newer ones that are worth a glance. I wouldn't consider the Bible a novel, and wouldn't waste my time with a Harry Potter book. I did read The Lord of the Rings while in jail in my youth and found that to be very enjoyable, tho if I recall correctly it is written in an early English style that was hard to follow, been awhile tho, I may not be remembering that one correctly. The Bible and a wonderful Christian woman, who I was foolish enough to let get away, are the reasons I'm not still in jail, so I have to look at that book as a life altering read, anyone struggling with life would do well to open it up and find what The Lord has to offer them. I don't know, if the past molded this here present time then maybe the past is the reason for this fucked up time line (though, personally I don't care because I understand this human experience is a learning lesson). In other words, I'm not convinced the people in the past did such a good job. |

Melville (and many of his contemporaries) were strongly influenced by anti-Christian "higher criticism"and "Transcendentalism." While some say Melville and Hawthorne were "anti-transcendentalists" they are still steeped in that tradition. IMHO, good books need not be EITHER strongly anti-religious or pro-religious to be good. But there have been (and continue to be) very strong anti-Christian biases at most mainstream big-time publishing companies. IMHO..."Mpby Dick" is slightly over-rated, and there are not all these "layers of meaning" in it that some lit profs try to portray. |

As I read it I could see world events jumping before my eyes. It takes a bit to get used to it but if you keep pushing yourself it is no longer difficult. The KJV is unbelievably amazing. The Book of Enoch is another good read. |
