Basically just like the pigments that color the human skin, insects have pigments for their exo-skeleton. In the Industrial Revolution, many trees in England were covered in thick black goop from factories. The Peppered Moth, which previously had been a mostly white-colored moth, quickly became a majority black species. Even now days, most of the peppered moths are black as the black moths were more successful than the white ones.
