One to two inches of snow is possible in the Southern Sierra Nevada this weekend. Snow levels around 8,000 feet Saturday will fall to about 6,000 feet Sunday. Mountain campers and hikers along the Pacific Crest Trail should prepare for cold weather this weekend.

Earthquake in Pakistan on September 27 2019 03:43 AM (UTC).


A shallow tremor sent terrified people running into the streets in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, days after a powerful quake killed 38 people, flattened thousands of homes and destroyed infrastructure and roads in the same area. The quake rattled already frayed nerves in the city of Mirpur as fears of the fallout from another powerful tremor sent hundreds into the streets and put local hospitals on alert.

The US Geological Survey put the quake at 4.7 magnitudes and 10 km deep, adding that it struck just four kilometers outside of Mirpur....

The city's hospitals were already packed with hundreds injured by the quake earlier in the week. The tremor came as rescuers continued to pick through toppled buildings to reach victims from Tuesday's earthquake.

The village of Jatlan on the outskirts of Mirpur appeared to be one of the worst affected by Tuesday's quake, while Mirpur was largely spared major damage. In Jatlan, bridges, mobile phone towers and electricity poles were badly damaged while its roads were ripped apart. ...

AJK information minister Mushtaq Minhas said at least 6,500 homes were destroyed by Tuesday's quake, adding that officials had begun to distribute thousands of tents to the affected residents. Mirpur, a city known for its palatial houses, has strong ties to Britain and many of its population of 450,000 carry both British and Pakistani passports....

Earthquake in Turkey on September 27 2019 07:20 PM (UTC).


Istanbul sits near active fault lines but a relatively minor jolt was enough to cause mass panic Thursday. People scrambled for safety and sought to call their loved ones elsewhere in the city in the aftermath of the earthquake off the coast of Silivri, a district on the far western side of Istanbul.

The 5.8-magnitude earthquake was followed by countless aftershocks and another major temblor at 11:20 p.m., though weaker in magnitude than the first one that occurred at 1:59 p.m. Thursday, concerned residents.

Parks in some districts were full of panicked citizens. Some set up tents and spent the night in the parks in Bahcelievler, a district with damaged buildings. Hours after a magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Istanbul, the city held an emergency meeting Friday on the National Disaster Response Plan...

Biological Hazard in Cape Verde on September 27 2019 07:13 PM (UTC).


Authorities in the Cape Verde islands off West Africa are waiting for experts from Spain to help determine why more than 100 dolphins died on a local beach. Local media report that around 200 melon-headed dolphins were found on a beach on Boa Vista island on Tuesday.

Officials, residents, and tourists managed to drag some of them back out to sea, but many returned. Bulldozers buried 136 dead dolphins....

Vehicle Incident in United Kingdom on September 27 2019 12:11 PM (UTC).



People with "detailed knowledge" of Gatwick used two drones to shut down the airport for 30 hours, according to a police report. A total of 1,000 flights were disrupted, affecting more than 140,000 passengers, during the three-day incident that began shortly after 9pm on 19 December last year.

Sussex police received 129 sightings of drone activity, with 109 of these from "credible" witnesses including a pilot, plus workers and police at the airport. Two individuals were arrested out of the 96 people of interest identified by officers, who carried out 1,200 house-to-house inquiries and took 222 witness statements in a police operation costing L790,000.

They were later released with no further action to be taken. A Sussex police spokesman said: "The incident was not deemed terror related and there is no evidence to suggest it was either state sponsored, campaign or interest-group led....

All of our cell phones here in Hammond, Indiana just went off with a Flash Flood Warning. We are under a severe thunderstorm warning right now, too.

It is like a waterfall outside. We are supposed to get 5 inches of rain on top of the deluge we got already.

Critical Infrastructure Disruption in Trinidad and Tobago on September 28 2019 05:37 AM (UTC).


Tobago is currently suffering an island-wide power outage. T and TEC Communications Officer Annabelle Brasnell confirmed this while speaking with Loop TT on Friday. She said T and TEC engineers are trying to determine the cause of the problem....

T and TEC said in a release that the blackout was not related to Tropical Storm Karen: "At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Friday 27th September an alarm went off at the Cove Power Station in Tobago, immediately following which the generators at the station tripped off, causing an island-wide outage....

White shaded areas on this satellite image this am show where clouds prevail over central CA. This includes the eastern third of the SJ VLY as well as the foothills and higher elevations of the Sierra. Spotty light rain is falling out of these clouds in the Sierra..

Extreme Weather in Scotland, United Kingdom on September 29 2019 06:08 PM (UTC)


Towns and villages in Aberdeenshire have been battered by heavy flooding. Shock footage shows cars submerged in water in the village of Crovie - with fast-flowing streams racing towards the sea. One local said they had "never, ever seen this much water". And Aberdeenshire Council shared a clip of heavy flooding on the A947 near the town of Macduff.

It came as they urged drivers not to ignore closed road signs. They wrote: "Do not ignore Road Closed signs". "Just to give you some idea about what we are dealing with this video was shot by one of our Roads Team at The Howe, Macduff (A947)." Severe weather warnings were issued across Scotland - with gale-force winds of up to 45 miles-per-hour expected in parts of the country. ...
