Lack of sunspots to bring record cold, warns NASA scientist
“It could happen in a matter of months,” says Martin Mlynczak of NASA’s Langley Research Center.
________________

“The sun is entering one of the deepest Solar Minima of the Space Age,” wrote Dr Tony Phillips just six weeks ago, on 27 Sep 2018.

Sunspots have been absent for most of 2018 and Earth’s upper atmosphere is responding, says Phillips, editor of spaceweather.com.

Data from NASA’s TIMED satellite show that the thermosphere (the uppermost layer of air around our planet) is cooling and shrinking, literally decreasing the radius of the atmosphere.

Switzerland faces hotter, drier summers and snow-scarce winters: study

Hot summers like 2018 and the record-breaking summer of 2013 could also become normal with temperatures up 2C to 5.5C on today on the hottest days of the year. Heatwaves would be both more common and more extreme.

At the same time, rainfall could also become heavier: up to 10 percent on current single-day highs.

Lastly, winters could get as much as 2C to 3.5C warmer meaning a higher snow line and only half as much snow at low altitudes compared to now.

Very unseasonable weather here in STL the past week or so. We tied a record low of 18 last Thursday night, then Friday night that 15 minute blizzard rolled through (our earliest measureable snow in 22 years). Yesterday we had another system come through and it dropped another round of light snow that lingered all night. Tonight we might tie or break the record low of 13, set in the 1940s. And late tomorrow night into Thursday a.m., another snow event! This is unheard of here this early in the year!

I think you're right, it might be our turn considering what we've seen thus far. The snow I mentioned above that we are getting tomorrow/thursday has turned into a somewhat major event now. 5-7" expected starting late tonight and continuing until tomorrow afternoon. Could get as much as 8". This could end up the largest snowfall here in November, ever. If it pans out, it will be the largest single snowfall we've had in probably 3 years. It's been super mild here several winters in a row. In fact, on the news last night they said our total snowfall last year was just over 7", and the year before it was not even 4" - TOTAL for the year. So this is super exciting!

I was right, this will be the largest single snowfall in 3 winters. Found out in this tweet (I have no idea who this guy is or if he has any business forecasting, so we'll see how that pans out):

@JoeTheWXMan17

Latest thoughts for the metro: I think the metro will see amounts between 4-8 inches widespread with a few isolated amounts to almost 10. This has the potential to be our biggest snow since January 5, 2015! Where we saw nearly 10 inches. #mowx #Ilwx #stlwx

Still flurrying here, but for the most part the snow is wrapping up. I'd say we got 6-7" at my house. Very fluffy, pretty snow. Wet, but not as heavy as I thought it would be. Went out and shoveled the walk and cleaned off my car a bit ago.

considering this storm is way early for the amount of snow,i wonder if it is an omen.this storm is breaking many records for being the heaviest 1st snowfall. here on the PA-NY border,we normally would have a few dustings and inches of snow before a snowstorm of 6"+. it is afterall mid Nov. but we have not seen snow fall until now. consider too the farmer's almanacs' confusing forecasts for this year. 1 said snow ,1 said colder.if it is colder here than last year,we would have less snow.snow stops falling once the temps dip much below 10 degrees.last year we were below zero in december.normally we hit below zero a week at most in late jan-feb.

does this mean we will have only large snowstorms? only storms dropping 6"+ ata time and no dusting or 2" snowfalls? after the year PA had with rain and floodng,i do wonder. here we are above our annual rain aand snow fall moisture total for the year. weather has not been normal for several years. remmember last spring, we went from AC temps back to snow and back to 50-60's all in 1 week.summer ended early and we had rain from mid aug on.
