California wildfire smoke has now made it all the way to New York City

On Monday, New Yorkers woke up to a sight all-too-familiar to Californians: hazy skies caused by wildfire smoke.

That smoke came from almost 3,000 miles away in Butte County, wafting across the continental United States to end up on the East Coast. The Camp Fire, which began on Nov. 8, has burned 151,373 acres, destroyed 12,637 residences and killed at least 79 people. It is now 70 percent contained.

As an impressive Arctic intrusion is expected to plunge into the Northeast on #Thanksgiving, temperature departures could easily range from 15-25F below normal. As such, many cold air records may be shattered with this surge of Arctic air.

California braces for 'parade' of storms that will bring heavy rain, wind and mudslides that could be like a 'flood on steroids' as the wildfire death toll rises to 84 and 899 remain missing

California is bracing for what meteorologists are calling a 'parade' of wet weather storms that could cause dangerous mudslides in the areas which were torched by the wildfires.

The rain will slow down search efforts in Paradise and will also wreak havoc on evacuees who are living in shelters and in their cars. The fire also creates a hard, waxy surface that tends to repel rather than absorb water. The result can be heavy runoff of rainwater mixed with mud, boulders, trees and other debris that flows downhill with tremendous force, said Jason Kean, a research hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey.

'Those debris flows have the consistency of wet concrete and move faster than you can run,' he said.

'It's like a flood on steroids ... and a big one can take out two-story buildings.'

Nearly 500 miles south of Paradise near Malibu, west of Los Angeles, at least two inches of rain are expected to fall on a second fire, the Woolsey, which has killed three people.

Close to 190 dead sea turtles were found frozen off the coast of Cape Cod Friday after low temperatures stifled their ability to make it safely to shore. The Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary said a "once in a lifetime weather system" of "gale force winds," cold temperatures and high tide caused the migrating turtles to become "incapacitated" by the time they were found along the Massachusetts peninsula around 6 a.m. ET Friday. "A lot of the turtles were found frozen in the water still," Mass Audubon's director Bob Prescott told NBC News. "I picked up two to three myself that were still in the water, the slushy water." Prescott said that while the organization will help facilitate tests on the turtles to determine the exact cause of death, the turtles did "essentially freeze." ...
