Flood in Bosnia and Herzegovina on February 05 2019 12:57 PM (UTC).

Heavy rain and melting snow caused rivers to burst their banks and cause flooding across Bosnia, damaging houses and blocking roads. A bridge in the capital, Sarajevo, collapsed after the River Zeljeznica overflowed. Milder weather has been witnessed following last month's sub-zero conditions.

In the space of 24 hours, temperatures jumped from 0C to 15C, causing snow to melt rapidly and trigger floods in central parts of the country. Zenica and Kakanj, towns in central Bosnia, declared a state of emergency as streets in some neighborhoods were inundated by water and rescue services began evacuating people from their homes on rubber boats....

Flood in USA (Michigan) on February 06 2019 01:25 PM (UTC).

Flooding in parts of Portland this morning has forced 50 residents who live near the Grand River to evacuate their homes. S. Tutt Gorman, Portland's city manager, said in a news release the flooding was caused by an ice jam and officials are working to create temporary shelters. Gorman advises all residents who see water approaching their homes to leave immediately.

Gorman said both city and Ionia County officials are actively monitoring the situation to determine if more action should be taken. Flooding could persist in the community through Thursday. Heather Orow, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Rapids, said this morning a series of drizzle and freezing drizzle is expected to hit the Portland area for the next 24 hours

Unusual geological event in USA (Arizona) on February 06 2019 08:01 AM (UTC).

Something is shaking the southwest and it's been baffling southern Arizona residents for years. The latest struck this morning, Tuesday, Feb 5, at 8:39 a.m. I felt it myself on the northwest side of town not far from Ina and I-10. I posted it on Facebook and the responses were immediate. Faye DeHoff wrote, "first it was a major rattle...like a huge truck about to plow into my home...then the boom..that shook my windows...I was sure some of them were broken but they didn't...my dog jumped up! I'm at River and Campbell." Ray C. Merrill wrote, "Oracle and Roger, it was shaking pretty good, and long enough for me to watch the blinds dance around, then get up and walk to the doorway, and it was still shaking."

There was a similar sensation last week on Thursday, Jan 31 at 8:51 a.m. The same phenomenon; a rumble causing homes to shake and windows to rattle. I felt this one too on the northwest side and once again, so did so many others on Facebook all across Tucson and surrounding areas. I checked with the three closest military installations. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base reported no sonic booms and neither did the 162nd Fighter Wing. Sean Clements from Luke Air Force Base's public affairs unit confirmed two sonic booms near Sells, Arizona, about 60 miles southwest of Tucson. BOOM. Mystery solved. Until he gave the times....

Extreme Weather in USA (Tennessee) on February 07 2019 04:39 PM (UTC).

At least 20 homes are cut off in Hamblen County due to a washed out roadway as flood waters continue to wreak havoc across East Tennessee. On the Hawkins/Hancock County line, a portion of State Route 66 will be closed for a while because of a landslide.

Rain moved quickly into East Tennessee on Wednesday night, and a flood warning has been extended into late morning, Thursday, for much of Northeast Tennessee. Three inches of rain in a short amount of time brought the threat of flash flooding Wednesday night....

...

TDOT reported State Route 66 near the Hawkins/Hancock County line is closed after a landslide destroyed an area of the road. Anderson County was hit as well. According to the Oliver Springs Police Department, officials have closed three roads: Windrock Road, Bennett Road and Airport Road. Arrowhead Park is flooded....

Heat Wave in USA (Alabama) on February 07 2019 04:45 PM (UTC).

It has been unusually warm across Central Alabama this February. The warmth is breaking several records across the state of Alabama. Not only are we breaking record high temperatures, but the morning temperatures are also breaking records. Anniston, Birmingham, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa had record high minimum temperatures Wednesday (2/6/19). A record high minimum temperature is basically saying we saw the warmest low temperature ever recorded on that day....

Critical Infrastructure Disruption in USA (Michigan) on February 08 2019 05:41 PM (UTC).

Power outages continue to impact West and Mid-Michigan as Consumers Energy reports there are 157,522 affected customers as of 8:20 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8. The Jackson-based utility says in an emailed statement that "back-to-back waves of icy precipitation" have not only made work for its crews hard, but have "caused extensive damage to the electric distribution equipment."

"Consumers Energy is in an 'all hands on deck' mode -- which includes crews from out of state -- to restore customers' power safely and as quickly as possible," the utility says in one of its Friday morning updates. "The damage from the storms is extensive and we estimate that restoration work will continue around the clock into Monday to get every affected customer restored."...

Volcano Eruption in Indonesia on February 08 2019 10:48 AM (UTC).

Indonesia's Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has spewed a plume of grey ash into the sky as fiery red molten lava streamed down from its crater. Authorities did not raise the rumbling volcano's alert status after the eruption on Thursday evening. But any activity at Merapi raises concern and local residents have previously been ordered to stay outside a five-kilometer (three-mile) no-go zone around the crater near Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed more than 300 people and forced some 280,000 others to evacuate....

Extreme Weather in USA (Arkansas) on February 08 2019 08:48 AM (UTC).

David White has lived off Crestwood Terrace in Marion County, Arkansas, for more than a decade. White said if it wasn't for an alarm, he wouldn't be alive. "My oxygen machine set off the alarm to tell me the electricity went down," White said. He could tell it was a tornado. "I got up off of the bed and started to head down the hall and the noise was so great, could hardly hear," he said.

White said the ceiling then came crashing down. "The tree went down, pinned me down to the floor," he said. After 45 minutes White was able to escape. "Worked my way back out of it, and my niece from up the hill came down with a flash flight so I could see how to get out of there," he said. But White's house was just one of several destroyed across the county. ...

Extreme Weather in Brazil on February 08 2019 08:40 AM (UTC).

A storm that brought torrential rains and tropical storm-force winds to Rio de Janeiro left six people dead, Brazilian authorities said Thursday. Two people were killed and two others injured when a home collapsed in the western part of the city, while a mudslide in Rocinha, Rio's largest favela (shantytown) claimed one life. In the south-side favela of Vidigal, one person was crushed by a wall that collapsed and two perished when a tree fell on a bus. ...

Wednesday night's storm dumped a month's worth of rain on Rio de Janeiro in the space of four hours, authorities said, leading to flooding and mudslides. Dozens of vehicles were swept away by rushing floodwaters, while winds of up to 110 km/h (68 mph) in some parts of the city toppled utility poles and roughly 170 trees, the municipal government said. Traffic on Avenida Niemeyer, one of Rio's main thoroughfares, had to be diverted after a stretch of the elevated bike path that runs parallel to the road collapsed. It will take "more than a day to normalize" the situation on Avenida Niemeyer, Rio Mayor Marcelo Crivella told reporters....

Volcano Eruption in Indonesia on February 09 2019

Hot lava and volcanic materials that spewed from Mount Karangetang volcano in Indonesia's North Sulawesi province cut roads and buried bridges, while bad weather hampered evacuation operations, officials said on Saturday (Feb 9). Local authorities are trying to evacuate 508 villagers from the slope of the mountain, said Wensi Rumbayan, a senior member of the quick rescue team of the provincial disaster agency.

The sliding hot lava nearly reached a height of 300m in Batubulan village in Sitaro district, where the villagers could not leave the area via land transport, said Rumbayan. "The hot lava and volcanic materials have slid down, burying roads. Bridges were also damaged and disappear from the surface because of the flows of the lava and materials,...

Flash Flood in Chile on February 10 2019 06:06 AM (UTC).

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in northern Chile causing rivers to overflow and forcing residents from their flooded homes. Extreme rainfall in the Andes claimed several lives and destroyed homes and roads.

In the Atacama Desert, normally one of the driest places on Earth, a 60m (196ft) waterfall that had run dry for 10 years has been reactivated. As the rains start to die down, families are taking stock of the damage to homes.

Freezing rain here in MO. Started very early this morning. When I got up there was already a thin but treacherous looking glaze on everything. Now it's raining more! Temps are still below freezing until a bit later so it will only get uglier before it gets better. Overall we're supposed to get the whole kit n caboodle today - freezing rain, sleet, and maybe 1.5" of snow. Roads in STL are a damn mess, glad I'm staying put today.

Here's a video. This is what it's like all over town: [link to twitter.com (secure)]

@MarielleMohs

Multi car pile up crash on the I-55 NB on-ramp in #ArnoldMO Vogel Rd. Even an Arnold police officer is stuck in this mess. No one is injured, but the ramp remains a sheet of ice. It is closed down. Drivers are stuck waiting. They’ve been here since 6 AM @KMOV #STLwx

@stormhighway

Conditions are insanely bad. No one in the STL region should be getting on the road now. If you are out, stop at the nearest gas station or restaurant and wait this out. #stlwx #mowx #ilwx
