Critical Infrastructure Disruption in Canary-Islands (Esp.) on September 29 2019 06:06 PM (UTC).


A major power outage in Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands left nearly 1 million people without electricity, authorities said Sunday. The local government said that the outage has affected "the entire island," but that emergency generators were working for basic services such as hospitals.

Patricia Hernandez, the mayor of Tenerife's capital, told Cadena SER radio that she expected power to be restored to most parts of the island within six hours. She said authorities were investigating the cause of the outage. ...

Flash Flood in India on September 29 2019 05:32 PM (UTC).


At least 13 people died after buildings collapsed and trees fell on them due to heavy rainfall in Bihar's Patna, Bhagalpur and Kaimur districts. Over a dozen districts in the state were lashed by heavy rainfall for nearly 48 hours bringing normal business to a grinding halt and disrupting rail and road traffic in most places.

According to the weather department, Patna city received over 200 mm of rainfall since September 27 evening, which was described by Principal Secretary, Disaster Management department, Pratyay Amrit as "totally unexpected". He also expressed concern over water having entered many power sub-stations which could affect the functioning of sump houses in the long run....

In Uttar Pradesh, moderate to heavy rainfall for the last several days at various places has caused great loss to life and property. Waterlogging has also caused the problem to people in their day to day life.

Torrential rain has thrown normal life out of gear, affecting road traffic badly. During the last 36 hours, more than 40 people have lost their lives in rain and rain-related incidents....

Finally, with only hours to go, Taiwan has finally ordered the closure of schools and markets as the typhoon is going to hit the capital before the sun rises in the west again. It was looking like they were going to send hundreds of thousands of people into harms way. Good move.

While several New Jersey towns got doused with heavy rain from brief thunderstorms Saturday night, one community got slammed with 70 mph winds from a violent downburst that toppled trees, knocked out power and forced road closures. Cherry Hill residents were still assessing the damage on Sunday from what the National Weather Service described as a "strong downburst" as the thunderstorms marched across the state.

"In a downburst, strong winds descend vertically through a storm, then hit the ground and 'fan out', often accelerating as they do," the National Weather Service said in an infographic published on social media.

"This led to significant damage in Cherry Hill." Towns south of I-195 got up to an inch of rain, though most had little wind, from the storms around 10:30 and 11 p.m. Saturday, according to Nick Carr, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Mount Holly. But Cherry Hill took the brunt of the downburst....

French offshore vessels owner Bourbon confirmed that its tug supply vessel Bourbon Rhode (IMO/MMSI: 9356359/253672000) sank in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean while navigating heavy seas near a category 4 hurricane on Thursday.

Three crew members have been rescued, the body of one deceased have been recovered, and responders are searching for 10 crew still missing....

Looking at the Atlantic and Pacific, #Narda is back in the water and is supposed to bring flooding rain to #Sinaloa and #Sonora for the next few days. Meanwhile, #Lorenzo has weakened but still post a threat to the #Azores and even impact to the #UK and #Ireland.

Tropical Storm in Mexico on October 01 2019 03:01 AM (UTC).


Tropical Storm Narda is moving north along Mexico's Pacific coast, leaving a trail of extensive damage to infrastructure and at least one death. Narda made landfall in Oaxaca on Saturday before being temporarily downgraded to a tropical depression. But after delivering destructive rain and wind to states along the coast over the weekend, the storm gained strength and was upgraded back to a tropical storm on Monday...

A tropical storm warning is in effect for San Blas, Nayarit, to Guaymas, Sonora, and for Islas Marias. The SMN said Narda will cause intense rains in seven states, and very heavy rains in another 17, including Mexico City. Schools have suspended classes across Guerrero, Nayarit, and Colima, and in some municipalities in Jalisco, Sinaloa and Oaxaca....

The Su'ao District Fisheries Association announced today (Oct. 1) that the Nanfang'ao Bridge has collapsed, injuring over 20 people. At around 9:30 a.m. this morning, the bridge suddenly gave way, injuring more than 20 people, reported UDN.

A tank truck was on the bridge when it collapsed, and it ignited after falling into the waterway, spewing smoke into the air. Video shows the tank truck having almost successfully crossed the bridge when it caved in, and at least three fishing vessels appear to have been crushed beneath.

At least nine people from two fishing boats fell overboard, and rescue crews are searching for them, reported CNA. The Yilan County Fire Bureau says that 10 fishermen have been rescued, six have suffered serious injuries, and four have sustained minor injuries, according to UDN. Su'ao Township Mayor Lee Ming-che told the media that five fishermen are still believed to be trapped under the bridge.

The bridge, which spanned the Nanfang'ao Fishing Port, was completed in 1998 and is the only steel single-arch bridge in Taiwan and the first bifurcated single-arch bridge in Asia. The bridge was 140 meters in length and 15 meters in width. ...

Silently and without pause, the giant African snail has been invading Cuba. With their shiny, brilliantly striped shells and bodies up to 8 inches long, the snails have become public enemy No. 1 for epidemiologists, and citizens have grown to fear their ability to transmit diseases and harm crops.

"I never heard of them before, but now they're everywhere," said Yusmila Marin, a 29-year-old nurse who lives in a neighborhood rife with the mollusks, whose scientific name is Achatina Fulica. In recent months, Cuban authorities have activated the nationwide civil defense system to battle the snails. But some say the state's response is inadequate....

Papua New Guinea's volatile Ulawun volcano erupted early on Tuesday, sending a column of red lava shooting up into the sky and forcing the evacuation of recently returned residents. Mount Ulawun, situated on the remote Bismarck Archipelago chain, displaced between 7 000 and 13 000 people from their homes when it last erupted in June.

High winds ripped off building roofs, downed billboards and knocked out power to thousands in the affected areas. According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the windstorm is emanating from the Indian Ocean and that it could cause a few hitches in the affected areas.

"What we are experiencing is a deep convective system in the southern section of Kenya. This system is moving from Coastal Kenya as it propagates inland toward South East low lands, Nairobi and Central parts of Kenya," said the department. ...

Farmers in more than 50 villages of Jammu district's Dansal block are a worried lot as monkey and wild animal menace have been destroying the agricultural produce, thus threatening their livelihood. Once the "contributors" of foodgrain in the open market, these farmers are now forced to depend on the ration being supplied at subsidised rate through fair price shops.

"The monkey menace has aggravated over the last few years. Farmers have either stopped cultivating their fields spread over several hundreds of acres or have been growing fodder only. It has now started affecting their livelihood," ....
