Playing the "what would I do in that situation?" theory crafting game, I would think that they would quietly help "him" out, and be seen doing positive things in his environment, so as to show that they were capable and willing to be useful to him, so that they remain where they are instead of being shifted out of the game.

Why would you want to be chosen as the head of the table? That's essentially a puppet position in which you become the primary target for a) everyone at the table and b) everyone not at the table. Even Neo couldn't defend himself against all that shit, and Neo isn't even real.
