Took the Day Off Work, Making Boeuf Bourguignon, $4.00 a Head Eats are Cheap
It's not hard to make delicious food, if you know what you are doing. I know there are other slow cooker recipe threads, but give me something gourmet. Here is what I am making (but I added the pearl onions, er, or will in a bit)
[link to www.thekitchn.com (secure)]
So dining for two (with a glass of wine left over from the bottle), cost approximately $4.00 each (not including the wine). Homemade, slow cooked, and smells amazing. Anyone with other suggestions that aren't just 'pulled pork' or ribs? Something classic, simple and elegant, and tasty not using anything but basic ingredients? I'm putting together a list to last us til the winter rains end.
Ethnic would be awesome. Tell me what your grandmother would make that isn't meat and taters.
I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. J.B.S. Haldane

Since your flag says Belgium...what would be a decent thing to try from your homeland? Something novel that your grandmother would make and the family go 'yes' granny is at the stove!

Oxtail stew or soup

bunch of oxtails, seared in oil with garlic or onion

into the slow cooker with some vinegar, wine if you have it, or water.

til the meat falls off the bones.

let it sit overnight to skim fat off the top.

the gelatin, you reheat and spice up. I like curry and ginger and turmeric.
the meat you add back, be careful of any little bones.

great for you.

port wind added makes it heavenly.

Great idea! I always forget oxtail but it is scrumptous and unctuous, a delicious meal. Cheers. Greenage for you!

thank you!

I have found rice flour to be the perfect thickening agent if you feel it needs thickening after you heat the gelatin up to make and serve the stew.

it dissolves immediately and leaves the broth pretty clear.

you can add any carrots, potatoes, or rice, or raisins to this too., when it is still in the slow cooker.

the raisins and the oxtails, a bit of honey splashed in and salt to taste.

I do not eat gluten. Boy do I not miss it with food like this.

Try Senate Bean Soup.

Hubs makes this with a pressure cooker. The hocks give the soup a great texture or mouth feel.

Mmmmmm.
