Nope, he didn't die. However, he DID talk about standing with a music executive backstage one time, turning around, then seeing the executive had turned into a reptile.

He was afraid to say much, afraid for his and his families lives.

Yes, he made comments about the shapeshifter. It was creepy. And the person you guys are remembering is Jimmy Chamberlain. He overdosed on heroin during the MellonCollie tour, but he didn't die. He was kicked out of the band for Adore, but returned for Machina and Zeitgeist. He's working with Billy Corgan and James Iha right now in the studio. Never died.

If anyone in the midwest listens to the Mancow radio show in the mornings, they would know Billy Corgan is on quite often as Mancow is always calling Billy's cell phone on a weekly basis. They are buddies.
