He was a NYT report on the DC beat, and got pretty deep inside the beltway. The picture he paints is one that many of us have imagined - he says that it was not uncommon to watch senator A from party B lambasting senator B from party A on the senate floor in the morning, and then to see them drinking together and laughing it up in their favorite watering hole on the same evening. In other words, they stage their disagreements for our benefit, and to refill their campaign coffers, but really they're pretty much all the same. Nothing matters as much as getting re-elected. I do think there's way more genuine rancor now, and I think Trump is at least partly responsible, because with him, it's all or nothing. Guys like Ryan that talk out of both sides of their mouths are finding out that they have to choose a side, and stick to it. They're all a bunch of swamp rats.
