U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Before I graduated from high school, I overheard the older brother of a close friend talking about shooting a bear. The bear had been discovered in a den, during the Wisconsin deer season. As I recall, in 1968, such a harvest would have been legal.

The older brother was a Vietnam veteran. He approached the den with another vet. The brother suggested the other vet poke into the den to see if the bear were still there.

The other veteran said no, he would not do it. The brother said, well, in Vietnam, you went into holes to get Charlie.

Whereupon, the other veteran said: yes, but I had a different rifle then. (speaking of the M16).

He considered the M16 a superior gun for close-range bear defense than the common 30-30, whether Winchester 94 or Marlin 336.

At the time, I thought it strange someone would prefer a .223 semi-automatic rifle to a 30-30 or larger caliber rifle.

50 years and considerable time investigating actual defensive shootings of bears later, my opinion has become less certain.

Gun Bans Don’t Stop Killers

After the Atlanta shooting last week, progressives dove headfirst into another round of moral panic about “white supremacy,” even before they knew if there was any racial motivation involved in the killings. When the shooter’s identity inconveniences that well-worn narrative, as it does in the Boulder shooting today, liberals will jump straight to pushing for more useless gun regulations.

In the wake of the latter shooting, Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer promised a vote on “universal background checks” this week, even though the Boulder gunman reportedly purchased his rifle at a store, which would mean he had a clean background check (unless someone there broke existing laws). Every tragic event is just an excuse to push another agenda item.

President Biden says we can pursue a “commonsense” agenda to “ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines in this country once again. I got that done when I was a senator. It passed, it was the law for the longest time and it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again.”

The longest time? The Federal Assault Weapons Ban lasted from 1994 to 2004 before sunsetting. Study after study shows that it did nothing to diminish homicides or mass shootings. Once the ban expired, the AR-15 quickly became the most popular rifle in the country, and yet gun violence continued to sharply drop for more than a decade. It’s been clear for a long time that criminality is tied to a number economic and societal factors, and not the type or number of guns Americans own. Mass-shooting trends, in fact, seem to be disconnected from overall gun violence (even when we rely on the gun restrictionists’ arbitrary definition of a “mass shooting,” which doesn’t need to involve a death).

The Political Focus on the AR-15 Is Mindless, Virtue Signaling Garbage, and the Facts Prove It

Earlier in the week, a mass shooting took place in Boulder, CO killing ten people. An Arab man named Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa committed the atrocity with a Ruger AR-15 variant. What his motivation was is still being investigated, though it is noteworthy that he was politically left-wing and had apparently expressed terrorist sympathies. He also appears to just be a crazy person, which is to be expected of anyone willing to gun down random strangers.

Regardless, because this shooting doesn’t fit the preferred political narrative, i.e. a white supremacist, other angles must be pressed to make partisan hay. That means gun control and the banning of “assault weapons” are the topic of the day.

This obsession with the AR-15 is ridiculous, and when you actually look at the facts around gun crime in the United States, that becomes plainly obvious.

For instance, did you know more people are killed with blunt objects every year than AR-15s? This per Washington Examiner.

Indeed, more are killed annually with blunt objects such as clubs or with bare fists than with AR-15s. There are at least 16 million AR-15s in the United States. Each year, about 300 people are killed with any kind of rifle. Therefore, it’s no exaggeration to say that 99.99% of AR-15s are never used to murder anyone.

When you look at the real numbers, it’s no exaggeration to say that AR-15s barely register statistically when it comes to murders in this country. As noted above, out of around 8,000 gun murders a year, only 300 occur with rifles. Of those, only a smaller fraction are committed with an AR-15. This despite the fact that the AR-15 is the most plentiful rifle in the nation.

Reminder: Biden's '94 Assault Weapon Ban Was A Failure

President Joe Biden loves him some assault weapon ban. He ran on his having spearheaded the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban and his promise to bring it back.

To be sure, his plan is popular with anti-gunners throughout the nation. Even many who wouldn’t think of themselves as “anti-gun” support such a measure. After all, doesn’t the media point out how we had a ban every time some maniac shoots up somewhere with an AR-15? How can they not support it?

Well, maybe because it didn’t work?

So, as heartbreaking as high-profile mass shootings with these weapons may be, the facts simply don’t support the notion that banning vaguely defined “assault weapons” will reduce gun violence. And we don’t actually have to speculate. Thanks in part to work Biden himself did as a senator, we had a ban on “assault weapons” in place from 1994 to 2004.

It didn’t work.

Subsequent research and policy analyses almost unanimously found that it had no significant public safety impact.

For example, criminologists from Northeastern University concluded that the 1994 ban had “virtually no effect.” Their research isn’t an outlier. A comprehensive review of available research by the Rand Corporation found “no qualifying studies” showing that banning assault weapons reduced mass shootings or violent crime.

Even an analysis by the liberal outlet Vox admitted that there’s “not much empirical weight behind” assault weapon bans and that “studies on assault weapons bans have generally ranged from inconclusive to unfavorable toward a ban.”

Writer Brad Polumbo notes that only 2.6 percent of all homicides are carried out with rifles in general, which means an assault weapon ban wouldn’t have any real impact on crime in the first place.

He’s right, of course.

Firearms Expert Ashley Hlebinsky Schools Senators on the Truth About ‘Ghost Guns’

If U.S. senators were hoping to give a lift to the Department of Justice’s proposed rule to redefine a firearm, they underestimated Ashley Hlebinsky.

She’s a historical powerhouse when it comes to guns. Hlebinsky testified before the Senate Judiciary’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, in a hearing titled: Stop Gun Violence: Ghost Guns. Hlebinsky started by shredding any pretenses of false authority by those using loaded terms and ended her opening statement reminding senators whom they represent.

“Firstly, I will not be using the term ghost gun and that’s because as a historian I try to be as precise as possible and the term is used more as a rhetorical tool, a marketing tool and because of that, it can create a false sense of authority on the subject,” Hlebinsky told the senators.

Hlebinsky knows a thing or two about firearms. She’s the president of the consulting group The Gun Code and was formerly the Robert W. Woodruff Curator of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Cody Firearms Museum, and is now Curator Emerita and Senior Firearms Scholar. Before that, she researched at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Firearms Collection.

Stop Using Australia to Justify Banning So-Called ‘Assault Weapons’


Anti-gunners love pointing to the Nation Down Under as a means to justify banning black rifles.

The most recent example comes from the , who in caterwauling about Judge Benitez’s recent decision striking down California’s 30-year-old ban on so-called “assault weapons,” wrote the following (emphasis added):

Earlier this year Australia marked the 25th anniversary of worst mass shooting in which a gunman killed 35 people, causing conservative Prime Minister John Howard to push for a ban on all semi-automatic rifles and all semi-automatic and pump-action shotguns. Thousands of unlicensed firearms were surrendered by residents.Australia has not had a mass shooting since 1996. In the United States, they occur at a rate of more than one every day, according to the Gun Violence nope Judge Benitez’s ruling should serve as the impetus for Californians to redouble their efforts to fight for reasonable gun control laws.

U.S. District Court Judge Roger Benitez struck down California’s 30-year-old ban on Modern Sporting Rifles (MSRs) when he issued his ruling on Miller v. Bonta, a challenge against the state’s law banning so-called “assault rifles.” Judge Benitez cleanly took apart the law by asking simple questions. Does the law violate the Constitution? Does the law adhere to judicial precedent? Are AR-15s commonly owned?

“Serious Errors” In FBI Reports Of Shooting Incidents

Dr. John Lott, Jr. of the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) recently released a paper written while he was a Senior Advisor for Research and Statistics at the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Policy.

His paper, Corrections to the FBI’s Reports on Active Shooting Incidents (May 31, 2021), examines the FBI’s previously released reports on “active shooter incidents” (ASI). The FBI defines an “active shooter” as one or more individuals attempting to kill or killing other people in a populated area. “Implicit in this definition is the shooter’s use of one or more firearms. The ‘active’ aspect of the definition inherently implies the ongoing nature of the incidents, and thus the potential for the response to affect the outcome.”

The FBI published its initial report in 2014, titled A Study of Active Shooter Incidents Between 2000-2013, using information from “104 police department records, after action reports, shooting commission reports, open sources, and FBI resources.” Since then, the agency has published additional annual or bi-annual reports. As stated in the initial report, the goal of these studies is “to provide federal, state and local law enforcement with data so they can better understand how to prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from these incidents.”

According to Dr. Lott, “all five reports so far issued were found to have serious errors.” These distort the trend of attacks over time and the evidence on factors that may be important in curtailing attacks in the future.

FBI Data Shows Number Of Mass Shootings 10-TIMES LOWER Than Media Reports

Washington, DC – -(AmmoLand.com)- According to a recently released report from the FBI, there were far fewer mass shootings over the past four years than were reported by the Gun Violence Archive, a private nonprofit that provides the data cited most often by the mainstream media.

The FBI found that while active shootings are increasing, they are not nearly the threat the Gun Violence Archive and the media would have you believe.

Here’s a breakdown of the FBI’s data for “active” shootings over the past five years:

Wait What? Are you Kidding Me?
The difference lies in the definitions.

According to their new report titled: “Active Shooter Incidents in the United States in 2020,” the FBI defines active shootings as:

Shootings in public places
Shootings occurring at more than one location
Shootings where the shooter’s actions were not the result of another criminal act
Shootings resulting in a mass killing
Shootings indicating apparent spontaneity by the shooter
Shootings where the shooter appeared to methodically search for potential victims
Shootings that appeared focused on injury to people, not buildings or objects


Shootings were excluded from the FBI’s list if they were the result of:

Self-defense
Gang violence
Drug violence
Contained residential or domestic disputes
Controlled barricade/hostage situations
Crossfire as a byproduct of another ongoing criminal act
An action that appeared not to have put other people in peril

By comparison, the Gun Violence Archive, (www.gunviolencenopeorg)or GVA, excludes nothing, even if the shooting is gang or drug-related – the two main causes of most violence in the country today.

Legislation introduced in Congress this month would require any semi-automatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine to be registered under the National Firearms Act.

The bill, H.R.4953, was filed last Friday in the House by U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch, a Florida Democrat who is outspoken in his support of gun control measures.

"Congress passed the National Firearms Act after the 1929 Valentine's Day massacre to tightly regulate certain machine guns & shotguns," said Deutch on social media Friday, going on to say, "It's time to update this law & regulate the weapon of choice in mass shootings: semiautomatic rifles."

Lacking from the Congressman's talking points is the fact that FBI crime statistics for 2019, the most recent year available, list rifles of all kinds as the type of weapon used in 364 of 13,927 tracked homicides across the country, or in about 2 percent of cases. By comparison, knives were used in 1,476 cases, or more than four times more often, while bodily weapons such as hands and feet were used in some 600 cases. Non-firearm/cutting weapons such as rocks and blunt objects were used in 1,593 cases.

FBI 2020 Crime Data Destroys Gun Control

U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- As it has done consistently for several years, the FBI Uniform Crime Report for 2020 once again undercuts the campaign by gun prohibitionists to ban so-called “assault rifles.”

FBI data showing rifles of any kind are the “weapon of choice” in a fraction of homicides simply do not support the anti-gun effort.

In any given year, rifles—including semiautomatic modern sporting rifles demonized as “weapons of war” by the gun control crowd—are involved in 2 to 4 percent of all murders. Last year, according to the FBI data, rifles were used for sure in only 454 of the 13,620 gun-related murders listed in the annual crime report.

The FBI acknowledges in its crime report for last year that its estimates “are based on data received from 15,875 of 18,623 law enforcement agencies in the country.” It is admittedly not complete, but it is telling.

Yet, the gun prohibition lobby and its allies on Capitol Hill and in the White House still want to ban an entire class of firearms as a strategy to reduce so-called “gun violence,” a term invented by anti-gunners to demonize firearms by deflecting blame away from the actual perpetrators.

The Framers Knew the Risks of Keeping and Bearing Arms are Far Outweighed by the Benefits

Gun rights advocates argue their constitutional rights are being infringed. Erik Jaffe, an attorney for Schaerr Jaffe who represents the Firearms Policy Coalition, which submitted a brief in this case, said people treat Second Amendment rights differently because they are afraid of guns.

“Let’s ask the question, are they being consistent in how they apply constitutional principles to that right,” Jaffe said in a phone call. “I understand they don’t like the right and I understand people are terrified of guns, I get that. … People are terrified of all kinds of things, yet if it were speech, we would never, never let courts get away with what they’ve gotten away with in New York and California.”

Yet another brief in the case was filed by Texas Senator Ted Cruz and 24 fellow Republicans including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who take an originalist view that individuals should be able to carry guns in public because the framers of the constitution said so.

“The inclusion of an individual right in the Constitution reflects the Framers’ determination not only that the benefits of guaranteeing that right outweigh the costs, but that no future legislature— including Congress—should have the ability to second-guess that determination,” their brief states.

The senators’ brief argues the framers understood the gun violence risks posed by the carrying of guns and decided to allow it anyway so the court should follow that precedent despite arguments that allowing more guns on the streets leads to more gun violence. They argue that the benefits outweigh these risks.

“In short, the Framers and ratifiers of both the Second and Fourteenth Amendments knew that the risks and benefits of arms — criminal misuse and defense against the same—were inextricably intertwined in the very concept of “bearing” arms,” the brief states. “They weighed those considerations and chose a broad right to keep and bear arms, rather than broad discretion to disarm the public, as not only the best solution, but one to be enshrined as the supreme law of the land — above any contrary choice made through mere legislation.”
