My mid-length, heavy barrel AR with 30 rd mag weighs right around what my loaded M1 Garand weighs and I can reach out effectively to 1000 yds with the Garand. Amazing rifle. The rifles coming back from the Philippines have been stored in cosmoline and while well used, they still have plenty of life in them. A new Criterion barrel and you are ready to roll. |
TheRon User ID: 75014720 United States 03/04/2018 05:02 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Gen. George Patton called the M-1 rifle "the greatest battlefield implement ever devised." The only problem is that it had an internal magazine, 8 rd, I think, the loading which was facilitated with a clip holding 8 rds of 30.06 together to be inserted from the top. Quoting: TheRon 75014720 You have no idea what you're talking about. You probably believe USAToday's bullshit about chainsaw bayonets for the AR-15, too. What? Many confuse clips with magazines now, if that's what you're talking about. With older WWII rifles like the M-1 and Russian Mosin Nagant, clips held the cartridges in place to be inserted into the internal magazine. Later the U.S. replaced the M-1 with the M-14 which had a detachable 20 rd mag. I have the semi-auto version M1A which uses the 7.62x51 rd BD, the larger 30.06 or 7.62x63 rd for which the M-1 was chambered. Or were you saying that the Gen Patton quote was erroneous or that he "had no idea what he was talking about"? LOL! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5461667 United States 03/04/2018 05:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | While it's a little heavy, that weight helps absorb the recoil of the .30-06 rounds so you can pour them onto the target. Very accurate and sniping is easy, too. Adjustable peep sights can be set to reach out and touch somebody. The wooden forearm and heatshield keeps you comfy while the gun is starting to smoke. It was undoubtedly the greatest battle rifle when introduced. We always loaded 7 down from the top, when the last round is fired the bolt locks back and the clip flies out with a little 'chinggg' sound. As you reload you still have debris and mud raining down from the berm you were putting them into. Shove another clip in, pull rearward on the action doodad and let it fly and you're ready to blaze away some more. The guv may be damaging these rifles so the semi-auto actions don't quite work. They're dicks that way. |

But the M-1 internal magazine was loaded from the top facilitated by cartridges held together by a clip. (The magazine is loaded, not the clip....LOL) My MIA, the semi-auto version of the M14, a select-fire, full-auto, does have a detachable 20 rd mag. It was the updated rifle which replaced the M1. It's not like a "stripper clip" like the Mosin Nagant uses. The inserted clip in the Garand was the only drawback to this amazing rifle. When the last round was fired, the clip would discharge with a noticeable "ping". Enemy soldiers within hearing range quickly learned that this meant the soldier was reloading.
