Dog lovers unite! Training a 9 month old intact male to not be aggressive/dominant.
All good info so if it's tl;dr don't even worry about it haha

Hello GLP family!

Sol (8 weeks old in my avatar) is a 9 month old black lab mix. His other breed I'm not absolute on but he has a lighter dusting of brown on his neck, and a brown overall tone that is only visible under the right conditions. It could be brindle but it's not visible enough to confirm that. He doesn't appear to have pit in him, he actually looks like a Dutch Shepherd or heeler but is black lab dominant. Because of this he's very small still but already weighs 50 lbs. His sister was yellow with the brown more visible in her ears and body.

He is VERY smart, in fact, he is the first dog I've been mostly successful with socializing, training and imprinting thus far. He is 80% obedient which is a good start considering he wasn't bred by a good breeder and is a horn dog, the other 20% he puts on blinders and absolutely tunes out. I chose a male to diversify as my last few dogs were female.

The people I obtained him from got him from a home where they also had his brothers and sisters but they could not tell me anything about his mother or father. It was shady and most likely a puppy mill situation, they even said he was aussie or border collie, but he is neither. He has one of his back dew claws and of course took a while to pull out of his confusion and instinctive high energy that seems like aggression, but he's not a negative force, rather he is very loving and tolerant to grabbing and uncomfortable situations.

Born into a situation with bad breeding and care, he was pulled slightly early from his mother and litter at 6.5 weeks when 8+ are always recommended. Because of this, he's very high energy and took time to stop being so mouthy and dominant over our other dog Luna, a golden retriever collie mix, but he's adapted very well.

For his first 8 months, we lived in an rv almost completely off grid in the foothills here in Loveland Colorado. He and Luna were constantly exercising outside and had plenty to explore and run around in. He did wander off a couple of times when we weren't paying enough attention, and even when we were and he wouldn't listen lol, but not in any extreme manner.

His biggest problem area was (is? It's been a while) with destruction of things, namely cables, carpet and furniture in the rv. He even managed to tear up carpet after i left him alone for not more than 2 hours as a test in our apartment 3 days after move in *sigh* haha

He hasn't been socialized all that well with children or smaller dogs and cats. Upon attempting to socialize him with my nieces and nephews, my brothers and sisters either weren't paying enough attention or were too nervous and that was frustrating to me and to him.

I've introduced kids I've happened to pass by whilst walking him and he's been fine, maybe a little nervous and shy. I've had him go up to other dogs, male and female, and he's MOSTLY fine. His biggest thing is he's very vocal and has piloerection in a small strip down his spine. He'll bark, whine, grumble or even growl at times just because he's anxious and is in his harness leashed and under my control when he'd rather be off leash running around. He does still obey but he's strong and can be a lot to handle. He's far improved with pulling.

I've began heavily toy training and putting him forcefully into stressful situations with myself to see his reactions. I get in his face, hug him, hold the toy away from him then near him, blow on his ears and face, make a lot of noise and use childish speak, grab him with my hands and kiss on his face all while keeping him sitting. He's done really really well! When he's impatient I'll drop the play and tell him bad dog then focus away from him for a few. When he's patient, stays, doesn't vocalize and doesn't react i reward him with his toy again and praise through play.

I am right next to a playground here and when it starts to get busy I'll sit with him and have him observe just how kids work. I make him sit and stay and reward him if he obeys. He still wants to bark and growl slightly when the kids are super active or noisy but his aggression comes more with other dogs. He's never shown intention to bite.

Any advice? What are YOUR thoughts on neutering, not a vets or Cesar Milans hahaha. What are your thoughts on eliminating potential for negative outcome with children and other animals?

My previous dog Cloe was phenomenal, but she wasn't raised that well. Similarly, she was used to having endless room and roaming time and forced into an apartment living. She wouldn't listen to stay, she wouldn't stay quiet, she was very aggressive towards cats and small animals and was seriously racist. She had 2 altercations with children in her life, both under extreme stress.

Lol great contribution thanks.

Neutering is very unhealthy is what research shows me, more so than a spay. Would you castrate or sterilize your children because somebody tells you it's the right thing to do? It's really fucking weird but i bet that is an eventuality in our society with population control being proposed. That's 98% of what I've seen as the reason to do it, and health they try to make unquestionable when hip displaysia and bone diseases and lymphoma are mostly caused by sterilization. That's where i feel like if anything a vasectomy makes more sense as you're not entirely removing genitalia.

But testosterone is not linked to aggression no matter how much that's pushed.

I kept my dogs bollox, he chewed something a couple of times but only when he was trapped in a room or something so I have never had that issue. I know some dogs who simply don't ever stop doing it. Wreck the whole house and end up being hated and sent packing! I don't crate dogs either so I cant recommend that when you are out as I don't like it. I put my dog outside when I go out. Unless its cold and crap obviously but for the most part he is happier outside. They do crazy stuff sometimes and totally forget themselves and its funny to see when their faces change when you call them out when they are being little fookers, Got to love dogs. I have been looking online and dogs chew with their balls removed too. Good luck and good read thanks.
