I don't think Cambridge Analytica got the Facebook info illegally. I think they did some other illegal stuff, but not that. They used the FaceBook and Google platforms in an extremely scary way, but for the most part a way anyone with the cash and marketing team can do. If anyone wants to watch 41 minutes of how it was done, (and great for you if you are into digital marketing) you can see the Global marketing director explain it all. And she is easy on the eyes. The Psychologist for Cambridge Analytica uses a personality test to get their permission and as a result he got access to all their friends and likes. This data was turned over to Bannon and the Russians who devised the bots, troll farms, disinfo articles, and anti democrat news stories to brainwash the masses of Conservatives to run to Trump like sheeple. Really? I used Facebook quite frequently for groups that concern my hobbies during the election process. Let me be clear that I was for Trump before he won the primary and wasn't swayed by anything on social media. But during the process Facebook was deluged by anti-Trump propaganda by a factor of at least 8 to 1 versus anti- Hillary propaganda. Pro-Hillary bias was disturbing at the very least. Especially considering she is the most evil and corrupt politician in modern history.
