Florida judge grants police request to seize man's guns under new law inspired by Parkland shooting
TALLAHASSEE — A judge Friday granted a police request to strip a man of his firearms using Florida's new gun law that the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School inspired.

The Tallahassee Police Department filed a petition in the morning seeking a court order to remove multiple firearms from Christopher Mark Newhouse Jr. of Tallahassee. Before courthouse workers went home that afternoon, officers had their ruling.

The filing is the first in Leon County, home to state capital Tallahassee, under the new law. Touted by Gov. Rick Scott, the measure gives law enforcement more power to take firearms from people with mental-health problems.

Broward School Violence: Cruz's Massacre Is Far From the Whole Story
Broward County, Fla., school officials portray as a great success their Obama administration-inspired program offering counseling to students who break the law, instead of having them arrested or expelled. They insist that it played no role in February’s school massacre by Nikolas Cruz. They also claim that in fact juvenile recidivism rates are down and school safety is up, thanks to the program. The evidence tells a far different story.

Murders, armed robberies and other violent felonies committed by children outside of schools have hit record levels, and some see a connection with what’s happening on school grounds. Since the relaxing of discipline, Broward youths have not only brazenly punched out their teachers, but terrorized Broward neighborhoods with drive-by shootings, gang rapes, home invasions and carjackings.

Broward County now has the highest percentage of “the most serious, violent [and] chronic” juvenile offenders in Florida, according to the county’s chief juvenile probation officer.

Before the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, the program’s most supportive community partner – the county sheriff’s office – privately worried that school-based deputies were overlooking increasingly dangerous threats. It warned that violent felons on probation were getting “several chances to reoffend” under the school program and those who put their victims in the hospital after attacking them on school grounds escaped arrest through the program.

“Their program is a lie, and it doesn’t work,” said Lowell Levine, a father with grown children whose Stop Bullying Now Foundation in Lake Worth, Fla., has received several dozen complaints during the past few years from parents whose children were repeatedly beaten and bullied by fellow Broward students, who suffered few or no consequences. As a result, some parents have sued the school district for failing to protect their children from violent attacks. At least one survivor of the Feb. 14 shooting is filing a lawsuit citing the district’s lax discipline policies.

Levine said he alerted Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie’s office about the flood of complaints regarding school violence in 2015, two years after its leniency program, called PROMISE, was put into effect. (PROMISE stands for Preventing Recidivism through Opportunities, Mentoring, Interventions, Supports & Education.) “But he refused to meet with me,” said Levine, who has been consulting with survivors of the Parkland shooting. “I was told they had it under control and that they didn’t need any outside advice.”

The $100 Million Parkland Boondoggle Broward Schools Doesn't Want You to Hear
Kenneth Preston is another side of the Parkland shooting story. The hushed-up school-safety side. This 19-year-old home-schooled Broward County student isn't about guns, isn't interested in feeding into the election-year politics of any party's agenda, hasn't gathered admiring Hollywood friends to bankroll a national revolt.

All he's done since the Valentine's Day serial shooting of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is spend more than 100 hours searching through thousands of pages of local government documents that most taxpayers would never dream of reading.

The story first was reported by DML News but avoided by most mainstream media who chose instead to expend their resources on the Washington anti-guns march. Immediately after the story became public, Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie tweeted out a message calling it "fake news."

What Preston alleges is that the Broward school system, superintendent and School Board members in particular, are directly responsible for shooter Nikolas Cruz and the student and teacher deaths not only by their liberal policies, but by holding back money directly intended to address school safety.

“In 2014, Superintendent Runcie successfully convinced Broward residents to vote on $800 million in bonds for Broward County Public Schools to invest back into the schools. According to The Qualification Selection Evaluation Committee (QSEC), an anti-corruption measure, there should be a committee of 11 people, five of whom are members from the public, that would decide what companies were given lucrative contracts to manage that $800,000,000 in voter approved projects. Dick's Sporting Goods to destroy all unsold firearms pulled from shelves after Parkland shooting
The sports retailer decided to destroy the rifles instead of returning them to the manufacturer, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported.

“We are in the process of destroying all firearms and accessories that are no longer for sale as a result of our February 28th policy change,” a spokesperson from Dick’s Sporting Goods told the media outlet. “We are destroying the firearms in accordance with federal guidelines and regulations.”

The rifles will be demolished at distribution centers and then delivered to a salvage company to be recycled. It was not immediately clear how many firearms will be destroyed.

Democratic Candidate For Florida Governor Releases Parkland Ad
The 2018 Midterm Elections are less than seven months away, and races are starting to heat up. Among the issues, voters are talking about gun control and the Second Amendment. After the Parkland, Florida shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C., and the push for gun control at both the state and federal level, it is expected that these issues would come up on the campaign trail for both political parties. On Monday morning, Florida Democratic candidate for governor, Gwen Graham, released her new ad calling for more gun control in the state.

Graham goes on to blame the gun lobby and Republicans for inaction. Some may even feel that Graham’s statement blames the gun lobby and Republicans for the shooting. Despite Graham’s claim, however, Florida’s legislature and governor have done “something” in an attempt to prevent gun violence and further mass shootings. Albeit, Second Amendment supporters do not endorse the measures and believe the new laws infringe on their Second Amendment right more so than prevent further violence.

Graham knows that Republicans in Florida’s House and Senate passed bills raising the legal age required to purchase a semi-automatic rifle from 18 to 21, banned bump stocks, implemented extreme risk protection orders, and instilled a longer waiting period for gun purchases. She also knows that Governor Rick Scott signed them into law. It’s undeniable that Republicans have taken some action, but it’s, unsurprisingly, not enough to satisfy her.

Graham has also been endorsed as a “Gun Sense Candidate” by the gun safety group Moms Demand Action earlier this month. If elected governor, she’s pledged to “suspend AR-15 sales, ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and strengthen the background check system so that it is truly effective and universal,” her campaign said in a statement.

Following the Parkland, Florida mass shooting, some companies decided that they would no longer sell semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15, and high-capacity magazines. Among them was Dick’s Sporting Goods. Not only did Dick’s state that it would no longer sell “assault-style” rifles or the “high-capacity” magazines, but it decided it would no longer sell any firearms to anyone under the age of 21. But what is the sporting goods store going to do with its inventory of “assault-style” weapons?
