British special forces soldiers 'are captured in Syria', Iran's official news agency reports

Iran's semi-official news agency has reported that an unknown number of 'British military men' have been captured in Syria by government forces.

They quoted the Lebanese news channel al-Mayadeen's Moscow correspondent, who claimed British troops were being held after 'infiltrating' the country.

According to the report, they were taken after fighting in Eastern Ghouta, near the capital Damascus.

Fars claimed it was part of a plot involving 'terrorists and NATO forces' to attack Damascus.

The US, Israel and Jordan were to launch attacks 'from several fronts', the report claims, but 'rapid, major victories' by the Syrian army destroyed the plan.

Israel and the US were to use air strikes, it also claims, to help rebels 'capture vast areas of Damascus' and bring about the collapse of the Syrian regime.

But a source quoted in the report said 'Syrian-Russian military commanders' began operations in Ghouta to repel the coalition once they learned of the plans.

The source also claims the evacuation of civilians from Ghouta was 'a bid to provide [captured] foreign agents' to leave the area.

The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for comment.
