It is an unarguable fact that less than 1% (no not the rich 1%) of Americans ever serve in the military.

Marching in review on West Point's Plain in the Summer of 1972, passing by cheering crowds of civilians and reviewing stands filled with Army brass and the occasional AG, SOD, SOS, it was more than a little unnerving when we thought about the fact that all these fine people, most of whom never had to risk a hangnail for anyone other than themselves, were so all fired up to send us off to fight a war that was always questionable at best. Yes we had all volunteered to serve and would proudly go on to do so, but the Armchair Generals that risked nothing but called for war and death (ours, not theirs) were always a bit disquieting.

There really ought to be a rule that those who call for war should be the first ones signed up to fight it. Heck even the generals do not go anywhere anymore that could get them killed. Perhaps we were all spoiled by being aware of men like Captain John F. Kennedy and his brother Joe, and even old Man Bush who whet out there and led the way, and put their own hairy asses on the line along with the rest of us. No I was not bitter nor am I today. I just like to do things right and be treated fairly and not be manipulated for another man's gain unless he is willing to stand besides me when I do it.
