The word, "dollar" is a weighted unit of measure specific to pure silver but can be used for gold. Most "currencies" are named after some weighted unit of measure like the British "pound". It is fascinating stuff. Our garbage Fed Reserve Notes are nothing but "debt notes/IOUs" or a debt instrument.

You are correct, like a Morgan silver dollar. A one troy oz. Silver eagle .999 actually exceeds the value of a true dollar by about 25%.
