In 1990, lava from a different vent on Kilauea took out Royal Gardens subdivision and Kalapana on the Big Island. So, it's happened before. Maybe this one potentially affects more people, not sure. I'm not from the Big Island, so I'm not familiar with the area. I do have family on the Big Island, but on the other side.

People on other islands should be ok. For those not familiar with the geography, the Big Island is at the bottom of the island chain, it's the biggest/newest island (well, there's a newer island forming in the ocean off the Big Island) in the chain, and the island currently over the magma hot spot in the tectonic plate. All the islands have slowly moved over the hot spot at various times in history.

It would suck to lose your house, but the land is cheaper around the active volcano area for a reason.
