"Wow. Just wow... In all of my years of watching hurricanes, I have NEVER seen one die so quickly. Within just a matter of hours, Lane's circulation was completely decapitated, with its convection sheered off to the northeast, leaving behind the low-level swirl that is now moving away from the Hawaiian Isl...ands. It was a category 4 hurricane yesterday morning; now it is a tropical storm and only barely worthy of that classification, given the total collapse of its inner-core deep convection. I dare say that this 4-category drop in 1 day is utterly unheard of for a tropical cyclone that is still over warm water -- even with the strong vertical wind shear!! Even under hostile environmental conditions, hurricanes don't just go from being a major category 4 storm and then seemingly "evaporate" the next day..."

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 8:15pm (8/26/2018)

"Strange Rains in Leilani Estates - There were localized heavy showers in Leilani Estates today that brought 7” of rain near Fissure 8. The system very much resembled the localized storm systems seen during the eruption of Fissure 8 which caused large rains and lightning storms. The localized storms observed while Fissure 8 was active were then generated by heat and gases by the eruption in Leilani. The working theory for today’s similar system is that large amounts of rain associated with Hurricane Lane distributed across the entire flow field created enough steam to fuel today’s isolated heavy rains. Attached is a video of the lava flows creating 'white out' conditions with heavy steam today.

LERZ Eruption - We are now in day 22 of the pause in eruptive activity in Leilani Estates. Lava was seen yesterday deep inside the cinder cone of Fissure 8, forming a small pond. The new sightings of a lava pool could be possibly explained as residual gas that pushed some lava to the surface, but the fresh lava is concerning nonetheless and will be watched as carefully as can. There are no indications that eruption in Leilani is resuming at this time based on SO2 output, seismic readings, and ground tilt readings. We will be watching Fissure 8 more closely once visibility over the flow field allows for more frequent observations inside the cinder cone..."

No Incandescent Lava Seen In Fissure 8, But Lots Of Steam

"USGS reported on Saturday that the Hawaii County Fire Department observed a small lava pond, deep within the fissure 8 cone, during an overflight. The threat from passing Hurricane Lane prevented the scientists from making any additional observations.

Today, that lava pond was apparently gone. Instead, steam persists on the cone and flow field, USGS said, “due to heavy rainfall over the past several days from water seeping into still-hot rock.”

"The EMA has issued a voluntary evacuation for two neighborhoods in Koloa town, which sustained heavy damage in the April flooding to their water reservoir. Flash flood warnings have been extended all morning and into the afternoon. Water levels on the Hanalei River have risen from 2 feet to height of almost 14 feet, peaking just a few hours ago! The levels have since started to drop recently, currently down to 8 feet.

Haena State Park under 2 feet of water. The Waiʻoli river is raging and is already damaging some homes..."

Kilauea Eruption Questions Answered

No incandescent lava was visible in the fissure 8 cone during the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory morning overflight Monday. "Flooding on Kaua’i, Eruption Update, and the County Announces the Closing of Pahoa Shelter.

Kauai Flooding - Heavy rains and flooding occurred throughout the day on Kaua’i, with as many as roughly 23 inches of rain falling in the last 30 hours. Flash floods were seen on the north shore of Kaua’i, causing Kuhio Hwy to be closed as flood waters pooled on the roadway. Rains have slowed around Kaua’i in the last few hours, except for around Mount Waialeale. The Hanalei River and Wailua River are steadily decreasing in depth from the peak water levels seen around noon today. A Flash Flood Warning has been extended to at least 8:30pm tonight, but the flood warning has been extended all day, and it is likely to be extended further. The heavy showers are due to rain bands trailing tropical depression Lane; though the storm is gone the associated rains continue.

Big Island Flood Advisory Canceled - The Big Island is under a Flash Flood Advisory, meaning flood conditions are possible, though flooding conditions are not happening at this time. Currently rains are falling at Ka‘ohe on Saddle Rd and in Puna, but the volume of rain is greatly reduced compared to what we saw over the weekend..."

"Flash flooding on Kauai took the life of a Koloa man Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters recovered the 30-year-old's body from Waikomo Stream. Police identified him as Joshua Bradbury.

According to police, a witness called 911 just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, after seeing Bradbury jump into the stream. His father tells KHON2 he was trying to save a stray dog.

The witness told police he saw Bradbury float downstream, then lost sight of him.

At the time, there was a flash flood warning in effect for the area.

Fire personnel from the Koloa and Hanapepe stations, along with ocean safety lifeguards, responded to the area to search for Bradbury.

His body was found shortly after 5 p.m. along the west bank of the stream.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy on Bradbury is pending.

"The dog was inching toward them, looking like it wanted to get into the stream and sure enough, it did," said Rob Bradbury, Joshua Bradbury's father. "They were just talking about it and Josh's friend, Noah, said if that dog goes in, man, I'm gonna have to jump in and get it, and it came towards them in a moment. A few moments later, Josh went in after it and he was able to get the dog. From what Noah described to me, he pushed the dog over the side and Noah was able to grab the dog, and then Josh got swept down and Noah lost contact with him and just went searching for him, running for him."

Miriam, Norman Move West Towards Hawaii

"Tropical Storm Norman has the potential to be the larger and more threatening of the two storms. The center of Tropical Storm Norman was located near latitude 17.8 North, longitude 115.7 West in the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Norman is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph , but a gradual turn to the west and west-southwest is anticipated during the next several days. Such a path keeps the storm over warm waters of the Pacific, and unlike Miriam, puts it east of Hawaii at the end of the five day forecast cone. Maximum sustained winds are near 65 mph with higher
gusts. The National Hurricane Center says rapid strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Norman is expected to become a hurricane later today and possibly a major hurricane on Thursday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center while the estimated minimum central pressure is 994 mb (29.36 inches)

Global forecast guidance has been inconsistent with where Norman may go in the days ahead. None show the storm approaching Hawaii sooner than September 6. However, some runs, such as yesterday afternoon’s European ECMWF model, suggested a direct hit to the Big Island with secondary impacts to Maui. ..."

Lava Update for Wednesday, Aug 29, 2018, 6:00 am – Kilauea's lower east rift zone overflight:

"Having reduced the frequency of our overflights since the eruption's pause, then being weather-cancelled because of Hurricane Lane, it's been two long weeks since our last update! Kīlauea continues to be dormant on the lower east rift zone, and no molten lava was observed. A great deal of steam rose from the fissures though, a result of moisture seeping into the ground from the heavy rainfall we've experienced during the past few post-Lane days. It appears that the ocean entry has finally ceased, as there was no lava entering the sea, and no steam plume being generated..."

"Today, Aug 31st 2018, Mayor Kim made it illegal to get within 50 yards of the new, entirely dead lava flow. 50 Yards! Includes Leilani Estates!

He squeezed in one more Emergency Proclamation, which also includes keeping residents from their homes for another two months.

Today, Mayor Harry Kim signed a fourth Emergency Proclamation even though the eruption has been stopped now for 27 days. In the proclamation it is noted as a justification the tiny dribble of lava that was momentarily seen inside fissure 8, and the last dribble of lava at the ocean entry. Both have now completely ceased and there is zero active lava visible anywhere.

Implications of this new proclamation:

It is now illegal to get within 50 yards of the the lava field created by the May 3, 2018 eruption!

“The lava field created by the May 3, 2018 eruptive event including a fifty (50) yard safety buffer and further depicted as Exhibit “A” is a dangerous area and condition, therefore, the public is prohibited from entering or congregating there unless otherwise authorized by Hawaii Civil Defense Agency or unless authorized by Hawaii Civil Defense Agency.”..."

Friday Aug 31st Update

"Roadblock Update - Now that the eruption has been stopped for 27 days, it has pleased the Mayor to remove two of the 4 remaining restrictive, unnecessary checkpoints. The two locations that will continue to cost taxpayers an enormous amount of money to staff 24 hours a day are the Highway 130 checkpoint on Leilani ave and the Highway 132 checkpoint by the Y intersection past Nanawale. Both of these checkpoints will remain in place most likely to keep people from taking a peek at the now dried up, dead lava flow..."

Hawaii Volcano Eruption Update: Summit - Saturday (Sept. 1, 2018)

"Still a mystery - Viewers have reported seeing a glow from the Ycam (lavacam.org) coming from Fissure 8 at night. Harry Durgin, Philip Ong, and John Stallman went down to the location of the lavacam to investigate last night. There was no light glow visible anywhere with the naked eye. Harry took a long exposure shot of Fissure 8 on his camera and was able to capture a glow located immediately over the cinder cone. With the emergence today of the lava puddle in Fissure 8, the glow seen last night in the mouth of Fissure 8 makes sense. Still yet, that Fissure 8 glow was not the same glow seen in the sky from the Ycam! Though we’ve reviewed thousands of images captured by the Ycam to determine this, we still don’t know the source of the mystery lights. Tonight there is no glow on the Ycam at all, yet we know there is a small amount of lava puddling inside of Fissure 8; two nights ago the strange glow was seen on the Ycam, but no incandescence was observed in Fissure 8 by USGS during their overflight. There is some other light source present that has not yet been identified..."
