"After a period of quiet, lava has returned to the Fissure 8 vent on the lower East Rift Zone of Kilauea.

The spattering observed on Saturday in the vent is far from the voluminous eruptive activity that occurred during June and July. However, it is a sign that Fissure 8 – located in the middle of Leilani Estates – is not dead.

The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory issued this report on Sunday:

On the volcano’s lower East Rift Zone (LERZ), incandescence was observed in the fissure 8 cone yesterday afternoon (09/01) with reports of activity extending into early evening. In addition to a persistent spot of spattering, lava slowly covered the 65-by-15 m (210-by-45 ft) crater floor by evening. Webcam views showed weak incandescence occasionally reflected on the eastern spillway wall from the crater overnight suggesting that the lava in the crater remained active. This morning, ground crews have no view of the crater inside the fissure 8 cone, but report the fissure 8 cone is quiet when viewed from a safe distance with no visible fume..."

New aerial video from the U.S. Air National Guard shows how the two major events altered the island's landscape. The Aug. 28 footage shows still-smoldering volcanic fissures surrounded by miles of charred landscape, coastal areas ravaged by landslides and homes cut off from the rest of the island by cooling lava flows.

"glow from Fissure 8 seen on Aug 31st. We now know that when they saw glow using a long exposure camera a few days ago that there was an lava pond slowly rising in Fissure 8. Last night the USGS images show that ponding continues inside the Fissure 8 cone this morning, and has not left the confines of the spatter cone and mouth of the lava channel. The fluctuations seen in light indicate that some form of gas-pistoning is taking place. According to John there is a couple hour interval between pulse events..."

"Lava remains weakly active in the Fissure 8 cone in Leilani Estates, and continues to fill the deep crater, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported on Monday morning.

There is no lava extending outside the walls of the cone and no flows heading down the spillway, the scientists said. Other vents were steaming due to morning rains.

“Early this morning, the Unmanned Aircraft Systems team was able to conduct a brief overflight of fissure 8 between passing rain showers, which resulted in abundant steaming on the flow field,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported. The UAS images that were released show “a small pond of lava on the floor of the crater within the fissure 8 cone, with some minor, low-level spattering and slow-moving lava just barely entering (but not heading down) the spillway.”..."

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 8:30pm 9/3/2018

"The lava pond inside Fissure 8 was visible and slowly sputtering during the most recent USGS overflight today. Only a very small amount of lava has entered the channel; the lava is primarily confined within the Fissure 8 vent. This activity is very weak, and may represent only gas escaping from the rift; according to USGS-HVO this type of activity is common as eruptions come to a close. There are no other indications suggesting that pressure is accumulating beneath the surface. Ground deformation and seismicity are low across Kīlauea, indicating that the eruption is NOT about to restart.

The other option we are considering is the chance that the rift is still connected to the summit, and has at least a partially open conduit in which no large blockages have occurred. This option is hard to detect if true, and would allow for slow excretions of lava or continued gas pistoning (gas driven fluctuation in lava pond levels) of lava inside..."

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 8:10pm 9/4/2018

"Fissure 8 - Lava continues to pool inside the crater of Fissure 8 today. The lava pond has been present for 5 days now, but has not changed much during that time. The level of the lava inside the vent of Fissure 8 has gradually risen over the last few days; however, there is no lava flow at this time. Harry Durgin and John Stallman returned to the ‘Y’ tonight to monitor the glow from Fissure 8. Their report is that incandescence has dropped below visible levels from the mouth of the cinder cone, only able to be detected via a long exposure camera. The pulsing seen in lava pond last night is gone now as well. USGS reports that SO2 levels around Kīlauea remain very low, and have risen only a small bit with the recent lava pond. There are currently no indications that the eruption is going to resume at this time. Seismicity and ground tilt show no signs of further activity in the past 24 hours..."

A cone within a cone? USGS says fissure 8 has formed a new feature

"KILAUEA VOLCANO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -
There's been a new formation spotted within the once highly active fissure no. 8.

"The cone formed as lava erupted from an opening in the surface of the flow that covers the crater floor," USGS scientists said. But aside from the new formation, no active flows were reported outside of the fissure 8 walls..."

Hurricane Olivia - It's a ways out, but right now is showing a direct hit on the Island.

"Hurricane Olivia has become an annular hurricane and increased in intensity today and now has maximum sustained winds of 130mph. The hurricane is moving WNW at 14 mph and currently, forecasters have a pretty high level of confidence in the track which brings the hurricane straight into the Hawaiian islands next week with impacts beginning around Monday...."

Major Hurricane Olivia On Early Track Towards Hawaii

“Although it is too early to pinpoint any details with regard to specifics related to potential impacts to the islands,” the Honolulu-based forecasters said, “forecast confidence is increasing each day as the guidance remains in very good agreement.”

Hawaii Volcano Update – Collapses Observed At Pu’u O’o

"On Saturday, Puʻu ʻŌʻō crater experienced a series of small collapses which produced episodes of visible brown plume throughout the day.

The plumes were most prominent at about 10:30 a.m. HST, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports (the activity was also reported across social media). The collapses generated “small tilt offsets and seismic energy recorded by nearby geophysical instruments,” the scientists say, although the events “had no discernible effect on other parts of the rift, though we will continue to monitor for longer-term changes.”

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 8:35pm 9/12/2018

"Fissure 8 has shown no increase in activity in the past day. The crusted lava pond tucked inside the cinder cone of Fissure 8 continues to slowly breakaway and slump inwards, with only small amounts of glow visible at night. Along the rest of the rift there has been only very small amounts of deflation seen, but no real changes in deformation along the Lower East Rift Zone and the Summit. Vog has been reported in the last few days, but we believe this has to do more with changes associated with Tropical Storm Olivia than increases in emissions. As recent as yesterday USGS re-affirmed that SO2 emissions are down to 20 tons per day, down from 50,000 tons per day when Fissure 8 was active. H2S gas, which is easier for humans to smell, has become more prevalent since the pause in activity, due to magma being deeper from surface. Also, when rain saturates the flow field there is steam and SO2 created by the rainwater evaporating..."
