"Fissure 8 has shown no increase in activity in the past day. The crusted lava pond tucked inside the cinder cone of Fissure 8 continues to slowly breakaway and slump inwards, with only small amounts of glow visible at night. Along the rest of the rift there has been only very small amounts of deflation seen, but no real changes in deformation along the Lower East Rift Zone and the Summit. Vog has been reported in the last few days, but we believe this has to do more with changes associated with Tropical Storm Olivia than increases in emissions. As recent as yesterday USGS re-affirmed that SO2 emissions are down to 20 tons per day, down from 50,000 tons per day when Fissure 8 was active. H2S gas, which is easier for humans to smell, has become more prevalent since the pause in activity, due to magma being deeper from surface. Also, when rain saturates the flow field there is steam and SO2 created by the rainwater evaporating..."
