Eruption in Puna Essentially Over, USGS Lowers Kilauea Alert Level

"Exciting news! After 155 days, USGS just now has stated that this eruption is not likely to resume in the near-term. That might be as close saying it’s over as we are going to get. This pause in activity marks the first time since 1986 that lava has not been active at Kilauea's surface for a period of 30 or more days.

USGS lowers Kilauea from a WATCH to an ADVISORY, and lowers the Aviation Color Code from ORANGE to YELLOW. It has officially been 30 days since lava has been seen at the surface of Kilauea. As stated previously, USGS would have a clock set for 30 days that counted down each day there was no lava visible, we have now run that clock out. The lowered warning level might be the closest USGS-HVO comes to declaring the eruption ‘over’, it should be noted that Pu‘u ‘O‘o has not even been declared officially over, only that it is “highly unlike for lava to return to Pu‘u ‘O‘o”..."

After 30 Days Of Quiet, Kilauea Volcano Alert Level Lowered

"The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on Friday announced the Volcano Alert Level for Kīlauea has been lowered to YELLOW/ADVISORY, with no active lava in sight.

The news of the new designation comes as a relief to eruption ravaged Puna on Hawaiʻi Island, which has been bracing for another wave of volcanic activity on the lower East Rift Zone ever since the destructive phase of the eruption, which began on May 3, went suddenly quiet in August.

“It has been 30 days since lava has been active at the surface of Kīlauea Volcano,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a new Volcanic Activity Notice. “HVO monitoring shows low rates of seismicity, steady, relatively low rates of deformation across the volcano, and only minor gas emission at the summit and East Rift Zone (ERZ). These observations indicate that resumption of eruption or summit collapse is unlikely in the near-term.”...

Decent size quake this morning. This location is in the ocean just south of the big island. There have been a few other smaller quakes in this same location.

While I'm at it, there has also been a swarm of small quakes
at Mauna Loa that I continue to watch.

Mr. BBB3 alerts that uptick in earthquake activity could cause 60 foot tsunami. He notes two times in history that where past earthquakes occurred, they resulted in tsunami along the Hilina Slump. Same place had multiple quakes today.

Well, that's not good. Sometimes I wonder if all the quakes during the eruption pushed the slump far enough that it would only take a nudge to make it go.

I think Hawaii is going to go off again. This is not over, only paused, IMO.

Funny, the eruption stopped as the hurricane skirted hawaii a month or so ago

I think the action will start up again SOON.

A couple of hours to a couple of weeks time frame.

I've always thought it was only a pause and have still been keeping a watch on things.

Do you think the low pressure from the hurricane stopped it somehow? I wondered what effect, if any, the hurricane would have on the eruption.

something sizable soon. Besides the hit on the antipode of Hawaii, I got unique confirmation because I am somewhat of an EQ sensitive. And for the 1st time since august 2, my ear canal has begun to unclog, and I can hear out of it again. The last unclogging of blockage was on May 3. YUP.
