Volcano Update: Middle East Rift Zone Could Be Refilling

"(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano is not erupting, however scientists say deformation signals are consistent with refilling of the middle East Rift Zone.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitoring during the past week shows low rates of seismicity at the summit and East Rift Zone (ERZ). “In the ERZ, tiltmeters near Puʻu ʻŌʻō and farther east continue to record an inflationary trend, consistent with refilling of the middle East Rift Zone,” the scientists wrote in the now-weekly Kilauea update. “At the summit, tiltmeters have recorded a slight inflationary trend; however, this signal is small and could be due to heavy rainfall.”

“Earthquakes continue to occur primarily at Kilauea’s summit area and south flank (magnitude-2.5 was the largest) with continued small aftershocks of the magnitude-6.9 quake on May 4, 2018,” the USGS said. “Seismicity remains low in the lower ERZ.”..."

As far as I can tell, that was the first large quake there since May & June. I'll dig further later on and see if I can find anything else.

"Since May the 13th 2018, a series of shallow (between 10 and 30 km depth) earthquakes have been recorded near the Mayotte Island with magnitude spanning from 4.2 to 5.8. From the begining of the sequence to June 6th, we have collected 9 eathquakes of magnitude greater or equal to M 5.0..."

Hawaii EQs continue to increase at a steady rate. mag 3+ multiple times daily now. more than ten a day (roughly) with Mag over 2.

Things are heating up. Established media silent.

Of course, they are. They didn't report on it when the lava was pulsating out of the Fissure looking as if it were alive! We wouldn't want Hawaii to lose any tourist money.

My ear blocked again, means huge EQ less likely, possibly. But who knows, Hawaii is still popping mag 3-ish stuff in the last hour alone...maybe we will see the orange stuff soon again?

I don't have any hard evidence to base my opinion on. It just didn't feel like it was finished, more like interrupted.

I just saw this and thought it was interesting that they are calling the 3.1 as an aftershock to the 6.9 May 4th quake. I don't know a lot about earthquakes. I just didn't realize afershocks went on for that long.

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 10/17/2018

"No significant changes along Kilauea today, a M3.1 earthquake occurred at 1:59pm on the south flank fault system. The location and depth of the earthquake suggest it to be one of many quakes on the southern faults of Kilauea considered to be aftershocks from the M6.9 May 4th quake. It is unknown exactly how long the aftershocks could continue for as the fault system settles, but aftershocks are expected to diminish over time. Heavy rains over the past few days in Puna might be influencing some tilt readings, during Hurricane Lane we saw heavy rainfall cause multi-microradiant changes as the ground saturated. What's also interesting to me with this recent uptick is how spread out the quakes are. They're all over the island and around each volcano.

Certainly doesn't sound good to me either.

they are all over the big island, yes. It is quite peculiar. The increasing frequency, without letting up for the last couple of weeks, is something to keep an eye on.

Think I will stick with my original thoughts on this. Time will tell. Any news about PGV? Totally shut down? or?

I found an article that I can't post the link to because it's banned for copyright issues.

Basically, it says they currently fly in weekly to check on the equipment. They can't begin any work on the plant until Dec 1 when the state of emergency ends.

Hawaii Tracker Nightly Update - 10/20/2018

"No significant changes on Kilauea today. There was a notable earthquake today on the southern flank fault south of Pu’u O’o, a M3.8 at 2:40pm. The location and depth of the earthquake suggest the quake was an aftershock from the M6.9 on May 4th. There are a couple earthquakes a day on average near the southern fault line around 5-7km deep, however today’s earthquake was the largest quake in the area since August 9th’s M4.4. Other seismic activity today has been within observed norms since the pause in the eruption. There are no indications that eruption will resume in the near future."

Volcano Update: East Rift Zone Inflation Continues

Tiltmeters near Puʻu ʻOʻo and farther east continue to record an inflationary trend, consistent with magma refilling of the middle East Rift Zone, according to the Tuesday’s weekly update from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

VIDEO: Kilauea Ranked No. 1 Volcano Threat By USGS

"HAWAII ISLAND - The threat ranking is not an indication of which volcano will erupt next, USGS says. Rather, it is an indicator of the potential severity of impacts that could result from future eruptions.

(BIVN) – Kīlauea is ranked as the number one threat among volcanoes monitored by the United State Geological Survey, in an updated Volcanic Threat Assessment just published by the federal government.

There are 18 volcanoes listed in the assessment as a “very high threat”. Mauna Loa is number 16 on that list.

The 2018 summit collapse and lower East Rift Zone eruption at Kilauea Volcano were dramatic and, for many Island of Hawaii residents, tragic events. As with all eruptive crises, these events offered exceptional opportunities to learn more about how volcanoes work and to answer some “bigger picture” questions.

What is the significance of the 2018 events when viewed from the historical perspective of similar events at other volcanoes? What impact are they likely to have on volcano science and future generations of volcanologists? What comes next, and how might we find out?

This latest chapter in Kilauea’s remarkable story is still unfolding, but already it’s clear that 2018 marks a watershed for volcano science, not only in Hawaii but also worldwide. Let’s explore some of the reasons why.

First, summit collapses like the one that so profoundly reshaped Kilauea Caldera and Halema‘uma‘u earlier this year are relatively rare. At Kilauea, this was the largest summit collapse since at least the year 1800, and it included the strongest summit explosions since 1924. Only three comparable events have occurred at basaltic volcanoes worldwide in the past 50 years. Much larger explosive events have occurred in Kilauea’s past but not since 1790, more than 200 years ago..."

Volcano Quiet, Yet Updated Emergency Proclamation Signed

(BIVN) – Kilauea Volcano is not erupting, however Mayor Harry Kim has nevertheless signed a Fifth Supplementary Emergency Proclamation, extending the state of emergency until December 29, 2018.

In a new activity update posted Tuesday, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported that “monitoring during the past week shows low rates of seismicity” across the volcano.

Scientists are keeping an eye on the East Rift Zone, where tiltmeters near Puʻu ʻOʻO and farther east “continue to record an inflationary trend,” consistent with magma refilling the middle East Rift Zone. At the summit, tiltmeters have recorded a slight inflationary trend, USGS says. “Sulfur dioxide gas emissions at the summit averaged 50 tonnes/day as reported on October 24, and 75 tonnes/day at Pu'u O'o on October 23. There was no sulfur dioxide detected by our instruments in the lower ERZ,” the scientists added.

The USGS “cannot project WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY AN end date to this eruptive event and has noted that previous eruptive events in the area have continued eruptive activity after lengthy periods of lull”, the mayor's latest proclamation states, as partial justification for extending the emergency..."

Puna Geothermal Among Companies Cited By Health Department

"Puna Geothermal Venture is one of seven companies recently cited by the Hawaiʻi Department of Health for air permit violations.

Puna Geothermal Venture, or PGV, is currently not in operation. The eruption on the lower East Rift Zone of Kīlauea Volcano forced the closure of the plant. The alleged violations occurred in the years prior.

The health department’s Clean Air Branch says PGV was cited “for operational, emission and notification violations. The violations were determined from inspections and a review of their incident reports. Puna Geothermal Venture was fined $11,100.”

According to the health department Notice and Finding of Violation, there were a handful of operational issues among the paperwork snafus. DOH alleges that:"

VOLCANO WATCH: Comparing 2018 Kilauea Summit Collapse To 1868

"Kilauea is not erupting, and while a slight inflationary trend near and east of Puʻu ʻOʻo suggests that magma may be refilling the middle East Rift Zone, low seismicity and reduced gas emissions do not indicate that the magma is shallow, scientists say.

This week’s Volcano Watch article, written by U.S. Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists and affiliates, examines the recent Kīlauea Volcano summit collapse, comparing it to events that occurred 150 years ago.

The USGS writes:

The prolonged yet dramatic partial collapse of Kīlauea caldera this past summer was the first to be observed in detail and the largest measured by subsidence volume of more than a dozen summit collapses in the past 200 years. The earliest known collapses (1823, 1832, and 1840) were large in subsidence volume but the process was not recorded by witnesses. The most recent collapses (1919, 1922, and 1924) involved smaller subsidence volumes but were witnessed by Thomas Jaggar and his staff at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The collapse of 1868 was the first collapse after a hotel was established at the Kilauea summit. Various observers were present for a few days each during the first weeks of the event. The months of March and April of 1868 are most often associated with strong earthquakes and Mauna Loa eruptions. The strongest earthquake, estimated a magnitude 7.9, generated a tsunami and a landslide and also started a collapse of Kīlauea summit.

According to Kaina, a Hawaiian resident of the summit area, Kilauea Crater had been very active from late January to late March with eight overflowing lava lakes. The lake activity increased greatly and, on March 27 when the first strong earthquakes (possible foreshocks of the M7.9 earthquake to follow) started, the crater floor was covered with lava lake overflows..."

Kilauea Volcano is not erupting. On Friday, the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory posted photos taken on November 6 and 7 of the (currently) silent volcanic features.

In the East Rift Zone, scientists say tiltmeters near Pu'u 'O'o and farther east continue to record an inflationary trend, consistent with refilling of the middle East Rift Zone. Low seismicity and reduced gas emissions do not indicate that the magma is shallow, USGS says..."
