Basements will flood and preps will be destroyed in a grid down scenario.
I got to thinking, if an EMP or any long term grid down scenario occurs basements will be worthless if you can't pump the water out. Think about how much your pump runs in a heavy spring or summer rain. How do you overcome that? A hand barrel / drum pump?? I think this is something many overlook.

That's because they have sump pumps retard. If the pumps don't run they flood. The only way is if you live on a hill. FFS you're retarded.

LOL most newer homes (as in 30 years or newer) have walk-out basements and are built on the side of an incline. Their basements are dry even in heavy rains. I only ever had one house that had a sump pump that ran. the other 8 - nope. Plus a lot of them don't even have basements, but are on slabs or crawl spaces. Where do you live that you have such a wet basement? Only the old houses with standard basements seem to have wet basement issues anymore.

When I bought my house I made sure it had absolutely NO indication of water issues ... and it was on a small rise above virtually all other houses in the subdivision.

NO SUMP PUMP in the house ... and never needed one. Always dry as could be for the 25 years I lived in it.

Don't mind the large groups with nothing to lose either. They will be entering your homes from all sides if they know you are there.

Depends on your basemnt. My house sits on one of the highest points around, my basement has never flooded. Have some neighbors who are not so lucky. Maybe preppers should not buy homes at the bottom of a hill?

If you build on a slope and incorporate a french drain, you don't need a sump pump.

If you need a sump pump, then your house was poorly designed.

True. When it pours the sump runs a lot. My answer for outages, which can occur when storms come thru, is a generator but eventually I would run out of fuel if the outages were long-term. I guess I could put in a battery operated smaller secondary pump and just run a genny part time to charge the batteries

It depends on whether you want a dry basement or not. If you want the floor dry, then you need a drainage system in the concrete floor or water will creep up because of osmosis or hydrostatic pressure.

If you are stupid enough to build your house on a flood plain with a basement that is below the water table.

Any decent prepper will have already figured this problem out, and probably not bought a place that is vulnerable.

But in the end, we all hev to die of something.

Many years of professional drain tile and water abatement system installation here.. I've seen homes on a hill get water... It happens.. also, op is right.. static water has great pressure and will get into everything. And to the comment about most homes where built on "good land" that doesn't flood!!... Dunno wtf that's about because most homes were built by rivers or other bodies of water... So... That indicates wet and muddy conditions..

Of course the best thing to do would be put a generac system in that runs on natural gas. Sweet system kicks on automatically with any power outages and once a month to check systems and charge batteries
