Donald Trump Praises His 'Incredible' Mom on Mother's Day — But Doesn't Mention Melania

There was one very important person missing from President Donald Trump’s Mother’s Day message: his wife Melania.

“My fellow Americans, this Sunday is one of the most important days of the year: Mother’s Day. Since the earlier days of our republic, America’s strength has come from the love and courage and devotion of our mothers,” the 71-year-old commander-in-chief said in a video shared on Twitter.

Although Trump went on to praise his mother, Mary MacLeod, who died in 2000, he did not mention the first lady, who is mother to the pair’s 12-year-old son.

Sorry, Melania. No church with your husband on Mother’s Day. No mention of you in his announcement. No day with the family today. Hope you enjoyed the day with your son while the self-absorbed asshole left you home and went out and played golf all day.

He talked about his mother on Mother's Day. I really don't see the problem with it.

Every household has their own tradition. In our house, Mother's Day was about your mother, not your wife, not your grandmother, not any other mother except your own.

The holidays celebrated between husband and wife were Valentine's Day and wedding anniversary.

Hello, everybody. In our house, everybody knows that President is only the third-most important job in the family. So this weekend, I’m going to take a little extra time to say thank you to Michelle for the remarkable way she does the most important job: being a mom. And I’m going to give extra thanks to my mother-in-law for the role model she’s always been to Michelle and the countless selfless ways in which she’s helped Michelle and me raise Malia and Sasha. I am incredibly lucky to have women who help me raise, love, and look after our girls.

So this Mother’s Day, say thank you. Say, “I love you” to the mother of your children as I have. And let’s make sure we show that gratitude and appreciation through acts of respect throughout the year. No one deserves that more than our moms.

See? Even that asshole Obozo even gave his thoughts to his wife and mother of their children in his Mother’s Day announcement.

Sorry Melania. Well, maybe not. I bet you were glad to get the bastard out of the house.

Not all presidents have mentioned their wives in their Mother's Day speeches, since the holiday was created by Wilson a little over 100-years ago. (FDR practically ignored Mother's Day, issuing a document decreeing the holiday should be acknowledged by flying the flag, but choosing not to give a speech.)

Some years presidents gave a nod to their wives, but some years those same presidents did not. (Ronald Reagan made no mention of his wife in his 1983 Mother's Day speech, but mentioned her in the speech he made in 1985.)

Presidents have historically followed a template for giving Mother's Day speeches:

1) Praising all mothers and stressing their importance in molding society.
2) Praising their own mother.
3) More often than not, naming a couple of specific mothers from the US population who have done outstanding things.
4) Speaking of political policies they've enacted that have made life easier for American mothers. (Reagan mentioned lowering inflation, making the price of groceries cheaper. Clinton spoke of his program to lower the rate of obesity in children.)
5) The president may or may not mention his own wife. This one is optional. (I think the objective is to be humble and not toot the First Lady's horn too much. She might be mentioned on the occasional Mother's Day, but not every year of the president's term(s).)

In the case of President Trump, it's complicated by the fact that he has children from 3 different wives. I don't think he can mention Melania while neglecting Ivana and Marla who are also excellent mothers. This takes the whole thing into awkward territory that is probably best not addressed at all.
