Re: Going Viral-Ebola vaccine is having ‘major impact’ but Congo outbreak may still explode; pg12
"Ministry of Health officials first identified cases of viral hemorrhagic fever when it reached the town of Bikoro earlier this month. On Thursday, officials said a new case had been identified in Mbandaka, a city of 1.2 million.

The new case in Mbandaka has raised the alarm among public health officials because it is the first time the virus has ever landed in a city that sits directly on the Congo River. . .

But the Congo River is effectively the region’s highway system. Barges and boats travel from Kisangani in the east through major cities including Bumba, Mbandaka — and eventually Kinshasa, the capital of Congo and home to more than 11 million people, as well as Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo. . .

If the Ebola virus traveled upriver from Bikoro to Mbandaka, some officials wonder, has it also traveled downstream toward Kinshasa, which offers direct air traffic to cities including Brussels, Paris, Dubai and Lagos, Nigeria?"

"The vaccine delivered in the DRC is experimental and has been shown to be very effective," the WHO said in an information leaflet.

It should be noted, however, that the UN agency has indicated that this Ebola vaccine can produce some side effects. Vaccinated persons may have a mild fever or cold symptoms or discomfort that may last from 1 to 3 days.

From one organization to another, Doctors Without Borders "MSF" on its side, spares no effort to fight against Ebola. MSF Emergency Field Teams in Ecuador installed a 5-bed isolation zone at the main Mbandaka hospital and 10 beds at Bikoro Hospital.

"The construction of two Ebola treatment centers with 20 beds each is already underway," says MSF.

Too early to tell. The virus has a 10+ day incubation period and this thing is just starting. Give it a few weeks and we will start to know what is happening.

Regardless the major exports of the area should experience a price jump. Picking up a few extra medical supplies isn't a bad idea. I found N95 particulate masks on sale in bulk a few months back. Always good to have on hand since they can be used while doing various construction projects around the house. A few extra things things of bleach. Nothing to go hog wild on or that wont be used.

The WHO believes that the ring vaccinations are working to prevent further spread. But only 8000 doses were sent to the Congo, and I'm sure a lot of that has been used up by HCWs snd the rich and powerful.

(Ring vaccination: The vaccination of all susceptible individuals in a prescribed area around an outbreak of an infectious disease. Ring vaccination controls an outbreak by vaccinating and monitoring a ring of people around each infected individual. The idea is to form a buffer of immune individuals to prevent the spread of the disease.)

Nurse dead in Congo as Ebola vaccination campaign starts

A nurse has died from Ebola in Bikoro, the rural northwestern town where the outbreak began, as the country Monday begins a vaccination campaign in three health zones affected by the deadly outbreak, Congo's health minister said.

The nurse's death brings the death toll to 27. There are now 49 hemorrhagic fever cases: 22 confirmed as Ebola, 21 probable and 6 suspected, according to Health Minister Oly Ilunga.

[snip]

In a hopeful sign, two patients who were confirmed as positive for Ebola have recovered, and are returning to their homes though they will be monitored, Ilunga said. They have left the hospital "with a medical certificate attesting that they've recovered and can no longer transmit the disease because they have developed antibodies against Ebola," he said.

Ebola, however, does in many cases remain longer in semen, and therefore can be transmitted through sexual contact for some months after recovery.

Comment: Soooooo, they aren't contagious anymore unless they are men, then they are.....

They are giving certificates of non-infectivity to men who may be infectious to sexual partners for MONTHS? And sending them on their way?

Not only that but it takes weeks to form antibodies from vaccination. It's still way too soon to see how effective the vaccination and the ring method are. Especially with it hitting a major metro in the first couple of weeks.

It's not clear if they are men or women, at least to me. But, there is no reason to believe that women can carry infectious agents in their fluids, also. And if memory serves, wasn't ethe virus found in the vitreous humor of men and women for a year? 18 months? I forget.

11,000+ people died in the last major outbreak. That's fairly significant.

Congo-Kinshasa: WHO Supports Ebola Vaccination of High Risk Populations in the DR Congo

press release

The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the support of WHO and partners, is preparing to vaccinate high risk populations against Ebola virus disease (EVD) in affected health zones.

Health workers operating in affected areas are being vaccinated today and community outreach has started to prepare for the ring vaccination.

More than 7,500 doses of the rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine have been deployed to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to conduct vaccination in the northwestern Equator Province where 46 suspected, probable and confirmed Ebola cases and 26 deaths have been reported (as of May 18). Most of the cases are in Bikoro, a remote rural town, while four confirmed cases are in Mbandaka, the provincial capital with a population of over 1 million people.

[snip]

A ring vaccination strategy relies on tracing all the contacts and contacts of contacts of a recently confirmed case as soon as possible. Teams on the ground have stepped up the active search and follow up of all contacts. More than 600 have been identified to date.

"Implementing the Ebola ring vaccination is a complex procedure," said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. "The vaccines need to be stored at a temperature of minus 60 to minus 80 degrees centigrade and so transporting them to and storing them in affected areas is a major challenge."

Deadly Nipah virus claims victims in India

Three victims have tested positive for the virus in the past fortnight. The results from the remaining six samples will be available later on Monday.

Twenty-five others have been hospitalised with symptoms of the infection in Kozhikode, officials said.

Nipah is an infection which can be transmitted to humans from animals.

There is no vaccination for the virus which has a mortality rate of 70%.

[snip]

Nipah virus is also "top of the list" of 10 priority diseases that the WHO has identified as potentials for the next major outbreak.

Nipah outbreak in Kerala: Six dead, Centre rushes joint probe team

The Nipah virus infection starts with 3-14 days of fever and headache, followed by drowsiness, disorientation and mental confusion. The acute encephalitis then progresses to coma within 24-48 hours.

With three more suspected Nipah virus-related deaths reported over the last 24 hours in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, where three deaths have already been confirmed, the entire state has been put on high alert, even as the Centre launched a multi-agency effort to contain the outbreak.

A rapid response team from the National Centre for Disease Control, New Delhi, National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Kerala, have initiated a joint investigation into the outbreak.

Fifty-one cases of Ebola haemorrhagic fever have been reported in Ecuador since the declaration of the epidemic on May 8, health minister Oly Ilunga told reporters on Monday.

Of the 51 cases identified, 28 are confirmed, 21 are probable and 2 are suspect.

Of the 28 confirmed cases, seven were recently recorded in Iboko and the two suspected cases were reported in Wangata, said the health minister, before saying that the first Ebola patient reported to Mbandaka is dead
.

The vaccination operation against Ebola haemorrhagic fever was launched Monday at the capital of Ecuador by WHO experts from Kinshasa, under the supervision of the Minister of Health.

This first vaccination against the disease in the DRC targets providers who have contact with patients and aims to contain the spread of this disease.

Nawty, and Feisty, good to see you back. Some people with actual REAL information covering the threats we face. I will start digging into this soon as it continues to evolve. As you I have great interest into viruses and science in general. There may be much more to this than we know at the moment. Given the unstable situations in Uganda and a government with lack of transparency, what we find out may be way behind the situation on the ground. All news from their government and media within the country must be taken with a large grain of salt.

There are reports on social media that the virus may have entered the capital city of Uganda. I am still waiting to verify the source and dig into the story more tomorrow. The original report was found on Crofs, and they are a bit leary of it...Either way here is the post...

How the vaccine will impact this outbreak as you mentioned is still way too early to tell. Hopefully, the distribution of the ring vaccination will be equal both geographically and who gets the vaccine.

In a couple weeks we will know much more, but every day that passes marks a chance for things to get out of hand quickly.

It is assumed that the strain is of the Zaire variety and similar enough to the previous outbreaks, but as of yet, I have not found any scientific reports detailing this particular outbreak. Please update me if I have missed something as I am just now beginning to look into it.

For those who say, OOOOHHhhh Ebola, this happened before, nothing will happen this time. Well as others have mentioned 11-12K people lost there lives and many have had long lasting impacts due to the virus.

We never know for sure just how something will behave. They know far less about these things then they often lead on to. Every new outbreak has the chance for mutation or a different outcome than the one prior.

Ok, I'll bite.

"The initial case, or index patient, was reported in December 2013....Two and a half years after the first case was discovered, the outbreak ended with more than 28,600 cases and 11,325 deaths." ( [link to www.cdc.gov (secure)] That's 11K deaths from one out break.

"Overall, eleven people were treated for Ebola in the United States during the 2014-2016 epidemic. On September 30, 2014, CDC confirmed the first travel-associated case of EVD diagnosed in the United States in a man who traveled from West Africa to Dallas, Texas. The patient (the index case) died on October 8, 2014. Two healthcare workers who cared for him in Dallas tested positive for EVD. Both recovered." ( [link to www.cdc.gov (secure)] So, it can and will travel...at a place and time of it's choosing.

You keep saying this is a fear and WHO propaganda thread. I went back and looked..I see no one afraid. I see no WHO propaganda. Please, feel free to point any out and I will fix it. If the thread makes YOU afraid, I'm sorry. That was not it's intent. Facts can be scary. We are merely tracking a concerning event. Events can be scary.

Since your posts haven't been anything other than attention seeking behavior, perhaps you need a hug. If you have anything constructive to add, YAY!, the more the merrier. Otherwise, you are free to return to your non-scary life and just ignore all the potential threats in the world today.

Oh, and FYI, if you look back at the old EBOLA thread, you will see that I have no love lost for the WHO. It was a tool of the Chinese since Margaret Chan was selected as the Head. I don't know much about the new guy, but it looks like he is trying to avoid the disaster of his predecessor, Chan.

Have a great day (or evening)!
