Three Ebola patients escape DR Congo quarantine

Three patients infected with the deadly Ebola virus escaped from a hospital holding them in quarantine in the Congo city of Mbandaka, an aid group said, as medics raced to stop the disease spreading in the teeming river port.

Two of the patients got out on Monday but were found dead a day later, said Henri Gray, the head of the Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) mission in the city.

Another left on Saturday, but was found alive the same day and is now under observation, Gray added.

But, this thread is fear-mongering....

The rise of disease is inevitable so we must always stay vigilant because zero hour arrives without warning for those who ignore the signs. Until there are no new cases Ebola always presents a level of risk and uncertainty.

So we will be seeing the same mix of theatrics due to superstitions again.
I wonder if families will try to break down treatment centers and break out the family members again...

It's worrisome that they are escaping. How many points of contact will this lead too?

How can you find points of contact when all you have is a corpse?

Everything they touched is contagious. Everything. Everything they bled on is contagious. Everything.

But, something isn't sitting right with me. It was my understanding that end stage Ebola, the patient wasn't ambulatory. Your organs are mush, you're bleeding from every orifice, and aren't really conscious. Maybe my understanding is wrong, but how did two end stage patients escape, then die a day later? Suicide maybe? Maybe they weren't sick and just under watch. There aren't a lot of details. I'll dig more later.

ppl here don't realize just by stopping at the local convenient store u potentiallly touch thousands if not millions of ppl and several countries. by the time the CDC would confirm and tell us, a disease would have covered the entire country. just going to the mailbox, you have touched the entire world without seeing a single person.

Depends on the strain, variance in oxygen, salt, temperature, and moisture are just a few of the ways that a single cell organism can die.

Two patients left the hospital in Mbandaka on Monday night with the help of family members, then headed to a church.

One died at home the next day.

Two police officers had been deployed to help track them down.

The WHO and MSF said they could not force patients to stay in hospital.

WHO staff in the Democratic Republic of Congo have "redoubled" their efforts to trace everyone who came into contact with the three patients.

Health workers in the Democratic Republic of Congo say local belief that Ebola is a curse or the result of evil spirits is preventing victims from seeking medical care, who are instead turning to preachers.

The pastor of an evangelical church last Wednesday died several days after he 'prayed' for an Ebola victim who went to him for help, a doctor said.

'Some sick people believe that the Ebola epidemic comes from sorcery - they refuse to be treated and prefer to pray,' said Julie Lobali, a nurse working in a hospital in Mbandaka.

You can't fix stupid (superstitious). I mean, you're talking generations of superstitious beliefs and those kinds of beliefs are extremely powerful. How many of you still avoid going under a ladder...or stepping on a crack? Kind of the same thing. Unfortunately, Ebola isn't the result of sorcery, and the superstitions are going to just fuel it. Sad.

This is exactly what I was concerned about when I looked up the cultural practices. I am gong to bet on churches being the main place of contamination for this outbreak.

Catholic priest 'infected with Ebola' in DR Congo

MBANDAKA, DR Congo: A Catholic priest has been quarantined after being infected with the Ebola virus in the town of Mbandaka in the Democratic Republic of Congo, medical sources said Thursday (May 24).

"We have quarantined a priest from the diocese of Mbandaka-Bikoro who tested positive" for the Ebola virus, a medical source told AFP on condition of anonymity. Religious authorities could not be immediately contacted.

Infection alert after dying Ebola patients taken to Congo prayer meeting

Two dying Ebola patients were spirited out of a Congo hospital by their relatives on motor-bikes, then taken to a prayer meeting with 50 other people, potentially exposing them all to the deadly virus, a senior aid worker said on Thursday.

Both patients were vomiting and infectious and died hours after the prayer session in the river port city of Mbandaka, Dr. Jean-Clement Cabrol, emergency medical coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), said.

“The escape was organized by the families, with six motorcycles as the patients were very ill and couldn’t walk,” Cabrol told a news briefing in Geneva after returning from the affected region.

“They were taken to a prayer room with 50 people to pray. They were found at two in the morning, one of them dead and one was dying. So that’s 50-60 contacts right there. The patients were in the active phase of the disease, vomiting.”

Health officials started trying to trace the motorcycle drivers and other people who came into contact with the patients as soon as the escape was reported, Dr. Peter Salama, head of emergency response at the World Health Organization (WHO), told Reuters on Thursday.

Comment: Ugh. So, vomiting infectious goo all the way from the hospital to the church presumably. How many people are going to come in to contact with that?

And, they use the word "escape" all the time, but then make it very clear that the patients can't be forced to stay. That isn't an escape, that's just patients checking themselves out.

Nigeria/Congo-Kinshasa: Ebola - Medical Experts Differ Over Nigeria, DRC Football Match

As Nigerian football fans warm up to watch live friendly football match between Super Eagles and the football team from the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, Nigerian medical doctors have expressed divergent views over the match following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the central African country.

While some say, there is no cause for alarm, some of the doctors called for stringent precautionary measures to avoid the mistake of the past.

In the views of a professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Prof. Olufemi Fasamade said there is no cause for alarm as the likelihood of bringing the virus to country was low.

According to Fasamade, Ebola is a condition easily suspected and vigilant port health authorities can screen and isolate ill people at the ports.

He explained that at risk people can also be identified by simply administering a questionnaire too.

"So there should be no panic or fear. Ebola is endemic in that country like Lassa fever is endemic in ours and Zika fever in others, he explained.

However, expressing divergent views, the Chairman Medical Guild, Dr Saheed Babajide who urged the Federal government to demand for the health status of the team and also authentic the report here in Nigeria before the team is allowed into the country.

According to Saheed, it would be disastrous if Nigeria should repeat the mistake of the past.

"Even after authenticating the results, as the team is landing at the airport, there should be comprehensive screening of the team again. The government should look beyond the diplomatic problem, but consider the risk that will come out of it if anyone of them is infected and a single Nigeria contract it.

DRC-Ebola: Father Lucien Ambunga recovers

Yesterday I saw this photo on various websites as I was trying to track down rumours that two priests had died of Ebola. That hasn't been confirmed yet, but this report from Actualite.cd has some good news: DRC-Ebola: Father Lucien Ambunga cured, he will leave the hospital this Sunday.

I hope they do address the needs of the health care workers first this time. In 2014, the S.W. coastal countries of Africa lost hundreds of workers because there were no facilities nor equipment in place to ensure their health while they treated patients. Nurses primarily, and doctors, who were on the front lines died during the performance of their duties. I hope this time they get it right. What a shameful waste of dedicated people.

That is good news.
I'm concerned that this is the Zaire strain and we aren't seeing the numbers on average of mortality.
I'm wondering if people are out in the boonies dying and no one is finding them.
Or is it possible that medicine and understanding of Ebola has helped to lower the mortality rate on this strain compared to the past when it was new?

Rare virus kills more than a dozen in India, health officials warn it could cause global epidemic

More than a dozen people have died after an outbreak of a rare disease in southern India that health officials warn could cause a global epidemic.

Health officials have imposed emergency measures in the southwestern state of Kerala after the more than 40 people were infected with the Nipah virus, which causes flu-like symptoms leading to an agonizing brain-swelling condition known as encephalitis, according to Sky News.

There is no vaccine for Nipah, which has a mortality rate of 70 percent, and no treatment beyond supportive care to make patients comfortable. The virus is listed alongside Ebola and Zika as one of eight priority diseases the World Health Organization believes could cause a global epidemic.

Health officials believe this outbreak began with someone infected by a fruit bat, a senior Health Ministry official told the Press Trust of India news agency. Subsequent infections are believed to have come from human-to-human contact, sometimes passing to relatives or medical workers caring for the sick.

WHO’s Congo Ebola plan assumes 100 to 300 cases over three months

The World Health Organization assumes 100-300 cases of Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo between May and July, under a revised response plan to the outbreak that it published on Tuesday.

An earlier version of the plan, based on information to May 15, had assumed 80-100 cases.

The WHO says the new figure is not a prediction but part of its modelling to plan and budget for a response.

95% with high fevers are caught leaves 5% not caught.
