How do you convince a person that constant complaining only makes things worse?
Someone dear to me is a chronic complainer on a decade-long streak of bad luck.

I have grown convinced he sets himself up for failure because he prefers having something to complain about than he does about succeeding in anything.

Is there any truth to this, or is it new age, "The Secret" drivel?

At the very least, he doesn't realize how tiring he is to listen to. It seems to be getting to where all I can do is avoid him, but I genuinely want to help him be happy.

He's trapped in his misery for so long now. I sometimes wonder if he's addicted to it.

It's called the self-fulfilling prophecy; what we believe about people, including ourselves, has a huge impact on what actually takes place.

You are very likely right about your friend setting himself up to fail. And then failing...

Just say in the middle of them complaining about something stupid..

You know..people who complain, will always find something to complain about..

Leave it at that and let them self-reflect.

His massive karma likes it like that. It is more powerful, more convincing, than you are. It wants him to be punished.

Pray for him, bless him, make him laugh. That's probably the most you can do, IMO.

Sometimes people go on and on when they don't feel heard. You could try parroting him.

"my car sucks"
"you think your car sucks"

"my wife can't cook"
"so your wife can't cook, huh?"

"my neck is aching"
"you hurt your neck?"

as we are having a run of unseasonably lovely weather

it's perfectly reasonable to be having BBQ's every night --in fact I think I might have to do one every night as well

tbh many of these muslims need to fast more often

they are all at much higher risk of heart disease and diabetes at lower weights than the uk

and tend to be very ( very ) sedentary

By ignoring them. Arguing your case only makes things worse as that is what they are also doing - arguing their case. So if you’re not reasonable to see things their way, simply ignore them.

make them read proverbs, which they will complain about so you'll likely need to read it to them by force.

ask him if he notices that on bad days he gets a lot of red lights on good days gets more green lights than usual

no matter how he answers, plant the 'seed' of the idea that his outlook just so happens to preceed events in his life.

i.e. that he can't deny days that he feels better, better things tend to happen to him and vis versa
