The electoral college is a critical part of a Federal Republic, and helps prevent election rigging.

All they would have to do, is rig the vote in one city, and they could rig the entire election.

The Electoral College, minimizes that threat.

A popular vote Presidential election will always elect a resident of California, New York, or Florida. Candidates won't even bother to campaign in other states.
