Several years ago I rented an apartment that had a very tall and old tree just outside the back deck, so close I could easily touch it. One day the landlord decided it had to be cut down because the roots were growing over the property line. I was so upset that I cried. I couldn't be home when they cut it down. I felt so estranged and upset by the killing of that tree. Now I try not to get so attached to trees; it's too painful to see them get cut down.
