Most homeowners [but especially apartment dwellers] load their shotties with bird because it won't penetrate through walls and accidentally kill their neighbors. And, you CAN shred somebody with birdshot if they're within a decent range... I'd say it's closer to about 6-8' depending upon what they are wearing... but importantly how FAT they are! Human body fat absorbs ALOT of the intial impact just like the cushioning it really is. That's why it takes a 30-30 -and sometimes multiple shots- to bring down really BIG game!

BTW: I live in a townhouse, and while my Mossberg 500 is normally loaded with birdshot, the sidesaddle also has both buck and slug loads. Just in case!

At 6'-8' anyone you could "shred" with birdshot is going to take three steps forward and take it away from you. He could knock you out with a baseball bat.

I'm trying not to sound nasty but I'm angry.

Some people have training and instinct to jump a gun. They will be on you with all they've got and beat you to a pulp, with your birdshot that doesn't penetrate drywall and kill the neighbors.

If you are very timid and frail and are bothered by naked rapists slipping in your bedroom window at night I guess this is a good idea. You can shred the bad guy without damaging your leather upholstery. Otherwise, it's unnecessary provocation and escalation of threat.

12 ga. 7 1/2 shot to the face and chest at 6 ft will stop any human unless they are fully armoured.

Good. Its the weapon of choice for victims of domestic violence.
In those situations where someone calls to say he is in your living room and coming up the stairs to hurt you bad it's the right thing to have in the bedroom, aimed at his face and chest.

Hope like hell hes not crouched to spring at your feet while you shoot harmlessly over him.

Lots of horror movies have scenes where the birdgun would be a great thing.

Any situation where you have to hole up and hide with someone you know you want to kill breaking down the door would be helped by a birdgun.

You can shoot birds with them too.

I don't think you can shoot strangers with them.

I don't think you can effectively address a stranger with a gun that is only able to stop him six feet from you.

Your timing has to be pretty good. Let's say he sees the gun and runs toward you. Shoot him too far back and he's got to kill you. Self preservation says so. Wait too long and he's airborne--and on you.

He can jump on you from six feet--and if he sees a gun he has to. You can blast but there's a good chance you will be grappling and if he's stung he will be feeling no pain and very very mad at you.

It will register in his brain that you aimed a gun and shot at him LONG before it registers that he's fine and you are a pulpy mess gurgling in a puddle.

I guess if you saw on your home security that a man in a mask with an empty knapsack and a knife in his belt was coming through your garage you could shoot him.

I'm just thinking, you hear someone in the hall outside your room, just happen to have your gun with you...

The door opens...

If you know you will shoot this intruder even if it's a little old lady, a child, a dog, your pregnant neighbor, you are good to go.

Otherwise, it will take you longer to identify the person and size up their state than it will take them to be on you beating your head with the butt of your gun.

This is true. But birdshot will work fine if you are very, very close. You can still blow a big hole in someone from 2 feet away but from a distance all you'll do is piss them off.

This topic has been debated to infinity on gun forums. Anything that wont go thru drywall based walls won't be very lethal. the human body is more of a barrier than modern contructed walls.. I knew a guy that shot a guy at short distance with bird shot and the guy ran away. Adrenaline is a crazy thing and you wont get a shot close enough for it to be lethal enough. 00 or 000 buckshot; or slugs or your praying he runs away. Good luck with that!

At 7 ft 20 gauge birdshot will blow an inch and a half hole through a 1 inch thick plank with a modified choke. The shot column does not have time to spread.
And,of course, you can butt stroke them if they do not go down, or a sharp jab to the gut with the muzzle.

@ Captain Chaos--i probably would ask who they were, why they were in my house before anything else.

It's not always necessary to be so reactive.

Sometimes to calmly tell someone with a really bad idea, "Please do not" stops them. I

But like I said, if you've got someone who definitely wants to hurt you and it's only a matter of time, sleep with birdshot.

If you are at high risk for victimization, maybe that's the right choice for mom in the bedroom with the kiddos in case someone gets by or through dad. But why are you living like that? Its just so limited as first line as to be probably more dangerous than useful.

This is why I keep a 50 cal sniper right next to my bed, you don’t even need to shoot the intruder just shoot through the ceiling you probably will kill like 7 people 3 miles away and get tenitus but that intruder will shit himself.

What was the warning shot for? I you come into a house and the owner is holding a weapon to defend his or her home, isn’t that alarming enough and a sign to GTFO?
 Quoting: Mr.Fox

Yeah, never fire a "warning shot". If you do fire a warning shot, don't refer to it as such when you recount your story to the police, say you accidentally fired the gun due to nervousness. You can only fire your gun to protect life and property (depending which state you live in there are different nuances), and a warning shot is NOT included. You are also not supposed to shoot at someone that is leaving, although I would argue that the perp had friends out front and "said" he was going to get them and come back and "hurt/kill/shoot" me.

There are books, article, youtubes on things you should and shouldn't say if you have to shoot someone. It's a little technical, but you should know this stuff if you are carrying.

I am angry because people are foolishly discussing weapon choices that accelerate and escalate violence.

I am VERY angry at whatever retard is selling apartment owners shotguns to use as clubs and batons, or brandish at people.

I'm angry about naive people being endangered by gunstore salesmen.

I shouldn't be nasty but I live in gunland. We have some very sweet but not very smart people here. I see the kinds of people who are likely to get shot idle beat to death diddling with a gun of very limited use.

Birdshot is a good choice for a mother with her children in the room as a second line defense of someone gets through Dad downstairs. But why is a woman with children living like this?

It's a good choice for a single woman living in an apartment in a bad neighborhood with a serial killer on the prowl.

It's good if you are in the pantry and Jack is breaking through with an ax.

It's a good choice for anyone in a closed populated space with a KNOWN attacked with KNOWN intentions.

I don't know why I bother. It's a survival of the fittest situation but ai really hate to think of innocent people lured by gun salesmen into strategies that i could MAKE someone have to STOP THEM.

Holding a gun in your hands cries USE LETHAL FORCE HERE

Same old thread--someone's going to use a gun to deter attack but holding a gun DRAWS DEFENSIVE ATTACK

Then they are going to use it to put down good dogs, scare off bad ones, signal for distress, light fires by shooting stones, aerate the compost and pound in tent stakes.

I feel innocent and naive people are taken advantage of and endangered too. It makes me mad.

My dad got shot with birdshot. He was twelve and skinny dipping with the sheriffs daughter.

He had to pick it out but some pieces stayed in his elbow. When my sister (same name as the sheriffs daughter) turned twelve, dad grew a golf ball sized lump on his elbow. It was the birdshot working its way out.

Its funny how the mind-body and memory work.

I feel kind of sorry for the man who got shot. I bet he needed gas to go to work. He was robbing the gas cans.

I had just bought a little 9mm carbine. I was visiting my uncle who lives way out in the boonies. Slightly intoxicated we venture off into the woods to shoot my new gun.

He mentions that it was good we were armed because his daughter had recently seen a bear nearby.

I quipped that a 9mm is useless against a bear.

His reply was one of those old man spirit of wisdom things. He said "Yeah, but it beats throwing rocks at it."

Damn the caliber. Just shoot his ass.

Which one?

Twelve year old daddy crying picking out shot from his naked body with tweezers and his pocketknife? He told me they were just swimming like theybalways had and had no idea why they shouldn't.

Sheriff who shot my daddy? Dads body held onto some of that shot until the summer HE had a twelve year old daughter same name as the sheriffs daughter. It's like some of the shot stayed with dad so he could have some sympathy for that man.

 Quoting: GSB/LTD

This.

Still?

Just shoot the intruder with whatever gun is handy.

Continue shooting the intruder until either,

A) the intruder stops moving, or

B) your gun is empty (police method).

The MOST IMPORTANT thing is NOT what caliber/shell you're using. It's that you hit the bad guy with your first shot. And again with your second shot.
