Re: Do you think Blazing Saddles could be made today?
Strangely enough, the big controversy at the time was Mongo. You see at this time, the word mongoloid was used and dying out as a word for children who through birth defects had mental challenges and were also labeled "retarded" ie developmental delay.

So parents of these children were incensed and felt Mongo was a veiled reference to these children. But it was not.

The black sheriff was not the issue and both white and black Americans laughed at the situations. After all he's virile and praised for it as well as successful.

great point. This is one of my favorite movies with my dad and we got into a debate that this movie would never be today.

One of my favourite films from childhood. As a privileged white male who'd previously never encountered a person of another colour. It made me realise what ass holes adults can be, and that black people seem pretty cool. Then I saw ,see no evil hear no evil and Richard Pryor filled in the rest. Bless his soul.

You could probably get it past the censors.

Problem is nobody has the attention span for a Mel Brooks movie anymore.

Hell no, liberals have major problems just understanding normal civility and reality. There's no fucking way they could wrap their heads around comedy making fun at sterotypes with racial enundo and overtures. Their PC heads would asplode...

Comedy that people laughed at with you, not at you is over. Just think of someone trying to do what Monty Pythons Flying Circus did in the 70's now days. The liberals would try and hunt them down and hang them. They think everything is a racist agenda because they are agenda driven racist looking for a problem.

but the "Archie Bunker" method of "comedy" is a crude form of communication.

I found Blazing Saddles and Archie Bunker insulting and sad.

Steve Martin, however, being born a poor black child was a classic. And Tropic Thunder, classic!

racism isn't really about our feelings about the 3 races (white, black, Mongolian), racism is discrimination according to race... has nothing to do with our opinions.

none of mel brooks' movies could be made today, well, maybe robin hood: men in tights and spaceballs could be made, but nothing of his from before spaceballs would be produced.

Re: Do you think Blazing Saddles could be made today?
Of course this is so long ago and only old timers will recall but at the time, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks made a record about a two thousand year old Jewish man. They had been doing this skit since 1966.

And there was a lot of goofy humor about what he ate and did to live that long. So besides his movies like The Producers and Blazing Saddles, he'd had a career as a writer.

Anyways he wrote a paperback book afterwards and discussed the controversy about Mongo.

His wife, Anne Bancroft was very pretty and of course he's a funny looking short guy, so they played that up as well.

Re: Do you think Blazing Saddles could be made today?
Yes, as long as the white people in the remake were always the brunt of the jokes and being mocked by minorities.

It'd get 100% on Rotten Tomatoes even I bet. But a 2% User Review Rating that they would fudge the number on saying the KKK skewed the rating and it would end up with an 88% User Rating.

Re: Do you think Blazing Saddles could be made today?
Now realize The Producers (1968) is a cast largely comprised of Jewish actors making a parody of Hitler. The premise is the idea is so wretched and offensive that this Broadway play will close immediately. But they really were running a con where they were stealing from gullible investors.

But then, the play is a HIT. So they make money on total garbage.

There is something to offend practically everyone in that film. His humor could be very edgy. So Blazing Saddles was not nearly as controversial.

If you were to listen to a Richard Pryor recording from about the same time, it's incredibly offensive. But people were NOT up in arms whatsoever.

People have gotten so ridiculous nowadays.

Adam Sandler would have to produce and direct the remake of Blazing Saddles.
The solution to most problems is generally close at hand.

Re: Do you think Blazing Saddles could be made today?
Richard Pryor was originally cast and supposed to play the role of Sheriff Bart. But he was dropped at the last minute, because someone presumed that he was unreliable or something.

Can you imagine how epicly different that movie would have been with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor together? They had a chemistry that was unique and powerful. Cleavon Little did an epic job, don't get me wrong.

But yeah, could it be made today? Hell no. People are far, far, far too uptight and snowflakey today.

I maintain there was less bigotry than there is now. Nothing has been served by the social engineering of the liberals.

People blended more as in the early Seventies black Americans were working side by side with white American in blue collar jobs and drinking a beer after work. And our kids playing together. And them coming over to dinner, and sometimes...not always going to church together.

Why did my Mom drag me to see that shitty movie. Worst 15th birthday ever. All I remember was the guy punching out the horse. And people farting. I had never seen a western, so it never made any sense. Still doesn't. What purpose do these movies serve in people's lives, besides shutting them up in a dark room for a while?

It could be made but the establishment would not like it. They even dissed the new Bruce Willies movie.

Same goes for 70s/80s style stand up comedy. Stuff like this would today be seen as homophobic for example:
