Remember when people were NICE | |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76538212 People were absolutely sweet during the 60s. I can remember our family getting our first off base home in a charming little suburb in Greenville, Alabama. We were a family of 5, mom, dad and 3 kids, we were white. The 2nd day of unpacking we kids noticed a rather large group of well dressed black women coming up the sidewalk, the all had cooked food, covered dishes, cakes and pies! They turned onto our sidewalk! We kids scurried past them to alert mom. Mom came to the porch in her house unpacking clothes. The ladies introduced themselves as being from a local Baptist church. One by one telling mom their name and shaking her hand deposited what dish they happened to be holding into moms hand. We kids kept running the food into the kitchen. The ladies didnt want to come in as they knew mom was busy unpacking with 3 girls to watch. The ladies left, we were overwhelmed at all the food and kind of stunned at the kindness of the Welcoming committee. I wish people would be that kind still. The young people of today have no idea what it really was like in small communities before all the hate started. No, they can't fathom it. Sometimes when we talk about it here, there is some younger person who jumps in and tells us all about the same bad stuff happening then as now. They can't believe how different the world was. And I think I was probably maybe 18 years old before I ever heard the "F" word. My family wasn't religious or straight laced or anything. It's just that people acted differently. Now it's F this and F that, negativity in every sentence. We used to have a society with class. Now we have a classless society, one with no class. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

He dug up all this footage from his high school in the mid 90s and the energy level coming from the kids was shocking. There was such an obvious shift that had occurred as a result of the internet. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73322355 Most kids did not use the Internet in the mid of 90s, and it was quite different than this today. It started much before the Internet. Thanks to MSM and Hollywood. We need more regulation on it when it comes to kids having access. Like a license to operate or something. Something needs to be done. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73322355 Yeah right. Everything you "regulate" turns to shit. |

At movie theaters and on airplanes, they had ashtrays built into the armrests of the seats. At high schools, they had smoking lounges, so the kids didn't have to smoke outside in bad weather. We had to sign out to "Downtown" to have a smoke. It took just long enough to walk down the hill and back up again to have a cigaret. You could smoke in the doctor's office or in the hospital. I had to have an operation on my arm, and whan I woke up I really wanted a cigaret, but I couldn't bend that arm, and the other one had an IV in it. The nice lady in the next bed put the cigaret in my mouth and lit it, then sat next to me holding it to my mouth so I could puff on it. Can you imaging that happening now? But I can't remember anybody ever smoking in church. LOL *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72341210 United States 06/27/2018 10:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It depended on denomination. Smoking was common but not outright condemned except by the Adventists. Episcopalians and Catholics had ashtrays in large meeting halls. Baptists and members of the Christian church (Disciples of Christ for example) were embarrassed and "burn one" with a buddy outside and duck back in. And you saw everyone at the liquor store. Some baptists would be really sheepish and red-faced buying bourbon. People are so uptight now. That was not typical in the Seventies. We didn't use coarse language around ladies. If a woman used foul language, then she was called a "broad". The word dame was actually originally a term of respect...ie classy lady like a princess. |

Back in the 70's and 80's I remember out of towner's always stating how personable and likable the people of Colorado were. When the new airport came in, people migrated in droves to the state and ever since it's gone downhill from there. It went from a community state to a "me me me" state. |

I find it interesting how many people need someone to be nice to them. As example, every time I'm in a big box store I always ask a open ended question to the person behind the register, So, how is your day... I have made long term friends by simply just asking that question and the conversation that follows. My momma always said... "you can be nice to anyone" I think we always got to show just a little bid of Jesus when we talk with people, I enjoy it and is one thing that keeps me going and not focusing on "me" |

hankie Everything User ID: 75555467 United States 06/27/2018 11:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Smoking on planes with real food, and getting paid to travel was about as good as it ever got. There was a period in 80s-90s where you could not smoke on Amtrak coach, but you could in your private sleeper. I am getting older and I do miss the time when people seemed to be more responsible and connected to and for each other. This age favors anonymity at the expense of family and community. Disposable existence, getting lost rather than accept responsibility.... People were nicer because more people overall behaved responsibly. That built community and respect for all. Now we have thug life. Your right and as I remember not that many people were dying from what they were doing. Cancer in the 1950s was rare, even into the 1960s. Make you ponder a bit on this on, people did not die from heart disease and margarine was not real butter, they used real butter. People ate what ones who run their mouths today saying it will kill you, well a lot of people are dying today and they are not eating it, go figure. Sorry I got a headache These are the times that tries men's and women's souls! May we come though it victorious! |

"An American President," a movie made in 1995, had a line in it where actress Annette Benning, playing the role of a lobbyist, tells Michael Douglas, portraying a widowed president, that the American people would never accept a president with a girlfriend. This was a few years before Bill and Monica. The movie was produced by an garden-variety liberal, Rob Reiner, the actor who played "meathead" in All in the Family. Notice how over 20 years later, that one aspect of the movie comes off as quaint, even old-fashioned. If that film were made today, its screenwriters would have a scene where the fictional president is having an orgy on the South Lawn and his girlfriend is a black trannie. One line from a movie made in the 1990s shows just how scroungy today's America has become. In spite of it already being quite "who gives a damn?" back then too. Now the US is a post-Obama society. A time following the most leftwing president in American history leaving behind an indelible mark. Best represented by his official portrait unveiled in DC several months ago. A painting by an artist who's known to insert hidden penises in the background of a work, sort of his version of "Where's Waldo?" . |
