Have friends who helped run an orphanage there who moved their family down following the earthquake.

Sounds really noble to be there helping, but why would any American or anyone else for that matter put themselves and their families lives in jeopardy to for something that will never make any difference whatsoever. They have been dependent on and helped by every country in the UN since they have been there and it has only gotten worse. If you didn't have something to offer them they would slit your throat. If they had to be self sufficient, they might just come up with a plan to improve their quality of life.

Average wage in the DR is around $4,000. They will do anything to get off that island and many die trying. Better than Haiti for sure but still a very tough life
