I asked earlier in this thread if Russia is still a threat? If NATO were to dissolve what would Putin do – does he want to rebuild the Soviet empire and would he do so by invading countries like Poland? The first article was written back when Trump was a candidate and said that NATO is obsolete. It is very anti-Trump and ends with if Trump continues with this position “he should be disqualified to become president”. Of course, that is about as stupid as it gets; he cannot be disqualified as a candidate for president for a position he takes! The author also cites The Telegraph for the statement that it “is a known fact that Putin has privately threaten that if given the opportunity he would invade Poland, Romania and the Baltic states”, hardly a reliable source! Therefore, I took this article with a grain of salt. The other 2 articles are about Panetta and a former head of the British army saying that Putin wants to rebuild the Soviet empire, which Putin has denied.

Would NATO dissolve if the US leaves? Not necessarily; it would be far weaker and it would take many years to even get close to its current strength with the US as a member. The most significant impact of NATO is not that it will counter a potential Russian invasion of say Poland; it is that is a DETERRENT to potential Russian aggression. Do I believe that Putin would actually invade Poland, Romania and/or the Baltic states if NATO dissolves? Maybe or maybe not; it would be very dangerous for Russia to do so, but Putin is ex-KGB and to me that says something.

The point is that the Soviet Union/Warsaw Pact is long gone, but the assumption that Russia is not a threat at all if NATO is dissolved (or at least seriously weakened without the US) may not be something that is true and we should be willing to bet on! Should the US just take the position that is not our problem? The last time the US was in an isolationist mode a certain event called World War 2 happened. After WW 2 the US became the leader of the free world; like it or not that carries certain responsibilities. No, that does not include the US carrying the disproportionate burden for defense, so I absolutely agree that all the other NATO members must pay their fair share and prepare so that NATO is a credible deterrent. If other countries that are directly threatened by possible Russian aggression are not willing to pony up then it is not the responsibility of the US to continue to make up that shortfall in money and equipment/troops. Let’s not forget that NATO should be looking at other roles (such as anti-terrorism) as Trump has stated.

Bottom line; I agree with Trump that NATO is not obsolete, but is it way past time that all NATO members pay their fair share now and take defense seriously. If not, then those countries need to be kicked-out of or the US leaves NATO.

To be brutality honest, At one point Europe needed us to be there. Now were just being used to subsidize their military budgets. Is this how friends behave In the twenty first century?. We have problems as well. Do the same people give the slightest damn about them?. You have In Western Europe had a long run of us securing your security. Take responsibility for your own safety.

NATO was created in 1949 to provide security against the Soviet Union. European Nations, along with the United States and Canada feared that the Soviets would take advantage of the power vacuum created by WWII and invade Europe to advance the spread of communism.

Since the Soviet Union was officially dismantled in 1991, and since most of Europe has been overrun with communism all on its very own, it's time for NATO to be abolished.

Maybe a new treaty of alliance new could be forged in its place , but far too much money is being churned out to fund a treaty that has long passed its expiration date.
