Publisher Asks 50,000 Americans: What would YOU Ask the Pope, the Dalai Lama and Iran’s Grand Ayatollah Khamenei?

Author’s New Thriller Inspires Book Written By Thousands for Three Readers

May 15, 2007--Knoxville, Tennessee: Suppose you were in a room with Pope Benedict XVI, the Dalai Lama, and the Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. What questions would you ask them?
Small press publisher Greyhound Books surveyed 50,000 American adults and asked just that. Cyn Mobley, Greyhound Books’ publisher said, “We decided to break about every publishing and marketing convention and have a book authored by thousands and published for just three readers. Of course, those three readers are pretty special: His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI; the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; and His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. We asked Fairfield Research to conduct the survey and interpret the results. We’ll publish the questions Americans asked in three exquisitely-bound volumes. Then we’ll go to the Vatican, Dharamsala, and Tehran to personally deliver each holy man his own copy of the collected questions.”

America Asks: The Holy Men exploded into being one afternoon when Mobley was discussing with author Gary Gabelhouse his latest thriller, Prophets Reborn. Mobley and Gabelhouse originally met through their mutual editor, George Donahue. Gabelhouse said, “There’s a scene in Prophets Reborn where the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and a Grand Ayatollah are in the same room. Cyn and I were just talking one day about what we’d ask if we were in that room. It hit me then, how we could put all of America in that same room, living out the scene in my novel, asking their questions: through a survey! From there, America Asks just snowballed.”

The questions are organized in thought-provoking and sometimes provocative categories. What are the top common questions asked of all three religious leaders? What questions did women tend to ask versus men—young versus old—poor versus rich—all religions compared—Muslims, Buddhists, Agnostics and Atheists—all ethnicities compared?

After delivering the three volumes to the holy men, Greyhound Books will publish a trade paperback version for the general public. “In our concept tests, readers demonstrated intense curiosity about and interest in what other people asked,” continued Mobley. “Realistically, most Americans will never have direct access to these religious leaders. Now, through our America Asks™ program, they CAN.”

Greyhound has established a list of upcoming America Asks titles, and is putting surveys in place to gather America’s questions for heads of state, tyrants, geniuses, generals, celebrities, murderers, athletes, tycoons, and a host of other public figures and celebrities.
“We wanted to empower and stimulate the everyday American, so we initiated a thoughtful conversation between 50,000 Americans and these religious icons,” said Mobley.
