Golden Globe solo non-stop around the world yacht race and Microplastics | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 14667087 United States 07/15/2018 07:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Some of you may find this interesting. The race is a solo non-stop around the world yacht race and one of the skippers is a 28 yr old female. Susie Goodall will become the youngest and first ever female sailor to take part in the race. A 30,000 mile journey around the world with no computers, satellite based navigation equipment and mobile phones as the requirement is to use only technology from 1968. Boats that enter this race must have been designed before 1988 and be between 32 and 36 feet long. [link to yachtboatnews.com] What I find interesting is this, Susie will be taking water samples along the route to help research the impact of microplastic is having on our oceans. The plastic particles in the oceans will be DOOM to humans someday if we don't do something about it. The abundance of microplastics in the oceans has grown steadily over the last few decades, as plastic use continues to rise. This 50th edition of the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race is a celebration of the original event and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s achievement in becoming the first man to sail solo non-stop around the Globe. Competitors in the 2018 Race will all be sailing rugged traditional production yachts like Susie Goodall’s Rustler 36 without the benefit of modern electronic aids. Race tracker.
