Big Island murder suspect mistakenly released; manhunt underway

Authorities said Smith, who's been behind bars since June, was supposed to be detained on $1 million bail.

Instead, he was mistakenly released and failed to show up for court Thursday afternoon.

After his no-show, a $2 million bench warrant was issued for Smith.

A Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said a "full investigation is underway" to determine how Smith was released.

"At this point, there is nothing more we can say about the matter until the investigation is completed," the spokeswoman said.
