Damn that was a tough field to plow for 30 years. I never asked for any help from my family at all. Then a friend heard that a man with a gun ran through my apartment yard shooting and killing people across the street, and that friend moved me to a safer place. I tried to give someone money who was homeless, and they got furious. So, it's not about charity, it's about perspective and kindness. Some of the most charitable people are spiteful. Quoting: New World Man Nothing wrong with being wealthy or spending that wealth. Look at all the people employed and living because they bought that yacht. Lots of skilled work goes into building a yacht. Just allllll remember this... A rich man does not make it to heaven. You know how many people the 40 mil boat could’ve helped??? Nothing wrong with enjoying what you’ve got, but to be that self absorbed to have a boat that big is wrong in my eyes. That means you have too much money than you know what to do with. DO you know how much a 30k bass boat could help, or a 40k truck could help? Where does it stop, what about people that eat fast food all the time when they have a fridge full of food at home? Greed and gluttony, have no set price limit... So by your standards the only people getting into heaven are those with only the bare essentials. Hmm interesting.. Well said, another way to look at it is if you have just $2,220 to your name, you're still richer than half of the world's citizens What helps society more? Passing $40M worth of hamburgers out for free to "the poor" or purchasing a $40M yacht that creates employment for thousands all over the world in fields such as engineering, manufacturing, research, and others? It costs about 10% a year to keep a boat on the water. That's an additional $4M a year spent creating jobs and purchasing goods. Low level thinking is what keeps many people poor; and poor, bitter, angry low level thinkers are the worst because they are smart enough to know they are squandering their lives but not smart enough to blame themselves. |

We budget, pay our bills (which are few), plan meals cooking and eating at home most days, go out to eat once a week, work on my paid for vehicles to keep them running etc. Go to the state park on the lake for swimming (frequently during the summer), hiking etc - inexpensive but fun activities. Life is good. I'm poor too but even though I'm on welfare I still managed to save up $1000 to splurge on crypto. It's now worth $400 so I got screwed but that doesn't mean I'm bitter about it. The difference between being "poor" and "struggling" is controlling our impulses to buy things we don't need or can't afford. Then there's a poverty of spirit which leads people to laugh at the misfortunes of others. A socialist would be happy to see anyone who is successful suffer any indignation. I feel a very strong correlation between my perception of how slaves must have felt in the past (and how ridiculous i used to be thinking shit like "why wouldn't they just use their sheer numbers to overthrow their owners) and how most of us feel today as we wake up to our debt based slavery. I can now clearly see that it was never so simple. We enslave ourselves by accepting these systems as the "only way". Once this feeling has been firmly rooted in our psyche we further dig our own holes by trying to make the best of the situation by trying to win as much as possible within the faulty paradigm. Slaves during the 19th century America could've run away quite easily. It was just easier to get fed and bred by slaving away in the southern sun. That's why slavery is so easy. Bertrand Russell said, "Most people would rather die than think." It was true when he said and it's equally true today. People would rather rant at fortunate people and gloat at their misfortune, than accept an offer to help them out of their poverty. That's because it seems more popular and easy to be a part of the huddled masses, as opposed to being the person who everyone envies. Socialism is more alive today than under communist Russia. The DeVoss family made their money LEGALLY and without milking the government till. Ms. DeVoss's father in law and his brother started AMWAY from scratch, with very little money, and turned it into the huge company that it is today. In the process they also made a bunch of other people rich to very well off also. Once they made their family money ... LEGALLY ... and actually with a good moral character, what is wrong with spending a bit of it? NOTHING!! That is exactly why people slave to start a company and build it up from NOTHING!! Money Envy by those who never tried to start and build up a business from scratch for those who did work their tails off to do that is repulsive to me. Why should it be wrong to spend some of your monetary rewards IF you do happen to make it good? fwiw Steve Job's new yacht - which wasn't finished before he died but which his widow now uses, could have paid for 10 to 15 yachts of this size and cost (his cost for his new yacht was reported to be $450 to $650 million dollars). Of those complaining here who is taking HER, Job's widow, to task for having and using such an expensive luxury? Obviously she deserves 10 times the grief that Ms. DeVoss is getting since Job's yacht cost 10 times ++ as much!! Sheesh .... Either you believe in the Free Market, or you believe in Socialism. If you believe in Socialism you need to rally around Bernie and Ms. Alexandria Cortez who want to eliminate the ability of hard working Americans to start and build new companies and be rewarded for doing that if they manage to succeed. ------------ edited to add: If it is WRONG for the DeVoss's to spend part of their BILLIONS on a nice boat then it is ALSO WRONG for an American to spend a ridiculous $50,000 on just a pickup truck or a car ... since a $25,000 one will get them where they are going just as fast and just as safely. Ditto on houses ... nobody NEEDS a house that is 2500 sf, a 1100 sf house is all any family NEEDS (and is the size of most houses built for families just after WW2). Think of all the good for society people could do if they bought the smaller house or the cheaper vehicle and used the "extra" money for doing good and not being SELFISH about using it for themselves!! The preferred transit route for large yachts in the Great Lakes to head south, and back north in the spring, is via the New York State Barge Canal (entered via Lake Ontario) and then down the Hudson River and out into the Atlantic. While some large yachts on Lake Michigan use the Chicago Sanitary Canal to get access into the Illinois/Mississippi River system for heading south or north, the preferred routing still remains the New York State Barge Canal.
