This sums up the problem.

Why not evaluate each post and poster on their own merits and not because of what other people told you to think.

How about a Karma Jubilee?

Put everyone back at zero.

Just kidding for all those who cherish and nurture their precious karma.

I have not participated in the Karma system enough to have a valid opinion.

I would like to know who sent [if it ever does happen] either type of karma my way, as well as what it was I said that inspired them to do so.

I have noticed in life, when you hold people accountable for their actions they are less likely to act "poorly". This would apply to a system such as Karma at GLP. A troll is less likely to karma-troll you when you can call them out on it. It would also help to realize friends here that leave you the green.

But that's not talking, that's just jumping on the bandwagon because everyone else is.

I've never looked at someone's karma first to decide if their post is worth reading, so bizarre you can't make that assessment on your own.

Just get rid of the karma system entirely. No good comes from it.

A. Person gets Karma and starts to get a big head. Then they become a board "personality" and we've seen that go to shit pretty often.

B. Person gets bad karma and it becomes a feeding frenzy. "I think I'll give them bad karma too since everyone else is doing it."

It must get pretty discouraging to post here if you've got a karma deficit. You might say "that's the point," but I've read low quality posts from Greens and strong posts from Reds. When people submit to groupthink, and approval, they're no longer thinking.

Yes, but when you get a green karma, as above, you don't always know why. I would leave it as it is. We shouldn't attach too much importance to a little red hand!

 Quoting: ^TrInItY^

I think I'm good with any of the options you've mentioned.

But I think maybe the best-case scenario is to make it retro-active but at the same time clear out everyone's red, if possible.

It would suck to lose all of your green.

But I think really just get rid of it. It doesn't bring out the best in people nor does it prevent the worst.

Something to think about.

I would imagine if all this data is made available for current and past karma exchanges some trolls would be shitting their britches at the idea of it...and I bet some really great people would be pretty butthurt to learn their greatest forum ally is also their greatest troll.

It would certainly expose anyone's history of karma abuse over the years. I am personally ok with this since I don't have any or never gave any karma, I do wonder what sort of shitstorm would come from such exposure.

It would be entertaining for a while as people are called out left and right....just when this site is getting cleaned up too. Perhaps the timing for implementation needs to be considered?

No. I think that is too much. I personally do not want to know. I also think that would start a war that could get waaaay out of hand and cause you all a lot more work.

How will we be able to pin threads if you do away with that system?

You have a valid point. As much as my curiousity wants to see who left me a nasty red with foul language it’s probably better that I don’t. :) If we get rid of it there will be no room for abuse of the system anymore.
