They forget that a human consciousness is not only a brain but mostly the soul. After the physical death, nothing is possible for being immortal. If the soul doesn't reenter the body.

"In principle, you can swap bodies as often as you like, because your mind is resident elsewhere, the android is just a temporary front end, just transport for sensors," Pearson wrote.

He continued: "You’re sort of immortal, your mind still running just fine, for as long as the servers carry on running it. Not truly immortal, but at least you don’t cease to exist the moment your body stops working."

That's so weird. They are trying to duplicate what we already have. we already do this. We just don't preserver solid memories from life to life. But it's not like that's a bad thing. What's wrong with starting over? It helps us grow and gives us the chance for redemption.

The mind is not physical. It is not contained in the brian.

Out of body Near Death Experiences are proof of this.

People remember floating above their body and viewing events that could not have been perceived while unconscious.

With "mind altered states"... You can access unlimited possibilities.

The Real question here is…what is Your Potential???

Mycroft Ward

Described as a 19th-century alchemist who, in his search for immortality, manages to download his personality into other people. In the present of the narrative Ward is seen as an internet based network of linked intelligences with the single-minded purpose of self-preservation through absorbing people's personalities.

Your physical consciousness theory can't explain NDEs where people remember floating outside of their bodies while doctors were working on them.

In one case a patient noticed a sticker on the top side of a ceiling fan blade (not visible from below) while their body was on the ER table. After they regained consciousness and returned to their body, they reported this to the medical staff who verified that the ceiling fan label was exactly as they described. This would be impossible if consciousness were solely a function of the physical brain.

Re: Mankind could have 'digital immortality' by 2050
Even a physical connection to your brain would not confer a transfer of consciousness, thus the entire idea of "uploading" your consciousness is permanently flawed until they begin implanting devices into your brain and your brain adapts to them. We are nowhere near this little dream they have.

They will end up with nothing better than a brain dump and some software/hardware framework that will run it in some fashion. Then you have to contend with the concept of a human brain with access to machinery and lack of access to human physiology. In short, the brain is not built for that and creating a model that doesn't fit the machine will create problems.

I also have to bring up the question of consciousness. Most people live their entire lives with a continuity of consciousness that is actually never interrupted. With your mind run on hardware, you could be rebooted. Would rebooting simply bring up a new "consciousness object" that is entirely separate from the previous iteration? This particular question was asked in a Star Trek episode about transporters. Just because you take a person apart atom by atom and then reassemble those same atoms, is that the same person or some sort of clone that won't know the difference and you actually died on disassembly?

I would place my money on genetic manipulation long before technology solves this particular issue. At least with that, you don't need to wonder about being a clone, you just live as long as can be possible.

The brain is the link between the soul and the body. And it also controls most of the body's autonomic system, so damage to the brain is usually life threatening.

But NDEs prove that consciousness continues after death and outside of the physical body:
