How many people are living in their cars nationwide?
[link to www.cbsnews.com (secure)]

The number of people who live in their vehicles because they can't find affordable housing is on the rise, even though the practice is illegal in many U.S. cities.

The number of people residing in campers and other vehicles surged 46 percent over the past year, a recent homeless census in Seattle's King County, Washington found. The problem is "exploding" in cities with expensive housing markets, including Los Angeles, Portland and San Francisco, according to Governing magazine.

Here in Santa Cruz county it's bad too.

I dunno why you would stay in some shit hole city in an RV. Take your camper somewhere out in the woods where you're welcome.

an old friend who I really only talk to a few times a year
lives (at least until may) in a traveling van
its actually pretty cool
he has everything he needs in it
its only him
he doesn't workout but has an anytime fitness membership
he parks in the parking lot every night
whenever he needs a shower or use a bathroom
he just goes inside
he works at a 711
but
has saved a lot of money
his only bills are his gym payments. gas. insurance.

I'm going to have a middle-age couple living in my backyard in about a week. He's trying to move his shit and store it in my backyard before his eviction notice ends. I've been feeding them occasional meals for several weeks. They have no skills beyond minimum wage.
I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you.

The laws making it illegal...are illegal. They have already been stricken down as unconsitutional in (nearly?) every district in the nation.

But municipalities don't care! They have cocaine! And little boy's assholes! They think they can do whateva they want!

We live in a fairly moderate income area and the stuff here is whack. The people who live here make decent money and their parents have sold their homes and bought RV's and I kid you not, every single summer we have about 5 rv's come into town once the snow leaves and they split in September. It is the old parents who just live in Rv's year round, kind of different I guess. How they get here and back to Florida in those rv's through mountains I have no idea. I would be terrified.

I am not drunk, I swear. Forgot to add that 3 of the rv's are parked in driveways of my neighbors and the others on surrounding driveways in another allotment. There is even one couple who parks their big boat in their kids driveway and live in it all summer. Now that one is kind of odd considering they could just live in a marina on Lake Erie all summer instead of a driveway.

I am wondering if it is legal? I don't mind it but the rv's are so long and one is next to a house with a little child and I am afraid a car might hit her since they can't see around that huge thing.

I get that the sons/daughters want mom and pops to be safe and mom and pops would rather stay in the rv than with in daughter or son in law but all summer in the drive?

They are all clean and good people it isn't like they are filthy tramps it is just a weird lifestyle and they are a big eyesore.

I see your point. I never saw this kind of stuff growing up. I also see some of the bigger, more well to do homes, having 10 cars in the drive. I am starting to believe things are getting so bad it is going back like the days of the depression and having 3 generations living under one roof. Man, I hope not, so sick of all these people having all these freaking cars filling the drives and spilling into the streets. Like an obstacle course some days I swear.

I did last winter in Idaho. It was brutal. Was working, didn't want to spend money on rent. Traveled alk around utah and Colorado as well. Never again. Very hard to find a safe (from cops) to park. Plenty of places to eat and showers are fairly easy to find. You can pay a few dollars to shower at truck stops but I won't give away the rest because when tptb find out the hacks, they put a stop to it. There are aps to find free camping & general parking. People will give info on the road. Just ask. Definitely finding a home base tho. Get a good sleeping bag for warmth.

I live in a $200,000 middle class home in Illinois. We use to pay 700 dollars in yearly property taxes, we now pay 6000 dollars for prop taxes. Not saying that is putting people in cars to live but in Illinois, the housing is horrible. Thinking of moving back to Minnesota.

They upped the value of my home which raised the taxes. Ya, like my older home went up in value, my butt. They lie to get more tax money. Like they aren't getting enough having the police stalk, harass and ticket everyone in town, lol. How much money do they need and for what?
