Quoting: Fret Wiz I pray the winds stay away until things dry out, this is as wet as I ever remember Virginia I read about that... sad. This has been a soaking summer in VA. The sun has barely been out for the past 3 weeks. My neighbors house got struck by lightening over a week ago in a nasty cell. Set the roof on fire and everything - nuts. |

These storms that move from south to north wreak havoc in this area. I am in Franklin County. Storms moving from west to east are usually broken up by the blue ridge mountains then reorganize over Bedford/Lynchburg. So Lynchburg cannot catch that break in any scenario. Authorities have evacuated parts of Lynchburg, Va., in preparation of what county officials reported as the “imminent failure” of the College Lake Dam. They are still looking for signs of structural failure early Friday as water spilling over the dam, threatening about 124 houses in the city of 80,000 people." I'm less than an hour from here. More rain expected on and off the next couple days I thought I heard on the news this morning it was 17 feet, not 17 inches. Does anyone know which it is? |

Been on the local stations all day yesterday and today. Quoting: Oaken Paw Yup. Tell me about it. I'm in Virginia too and had close to two feet of water in my garage a few weeks ago. The rainfall in a few hours flooded the area and left the street one-quarter mile from home swallowing cars. There are three cars in the flooded area; the one to the right fell off the road and is under five feet of water in the ditch. Deplorable Zenobia User ID: 6305700 United States 08/03/2018 11:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | NC here and it's never ending rain here training up to VA and parts north. Folks....here's your checklist for this weather: 1. Turn ON your damn headlights while driving in daytime 2. Know your vehicle's limits for crossing streets/roads that are instant ponds in these river-of-rain bouts. 3. Be mindful of winds whipping trees near house due to super ground saturation. And thought struggles against the results, trying to avoid those unpleasant results while keeping on with that way of thinking. FlashBuzzkill User ID: 75251329 United States 08/03/2018 11:31 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know every inch of Blackwater creek. I hiked up and down it for years. Fortunately only a couple of homes are endangered, we're getting more rain today and it could be a real mess. Anyways, the creek flows between serious hills on both sides so it's only the trails and critters down there in any real danger. On the plus side they fixed the combined sewer overflow system 20 years ago which was spitting raw sewage in the creek every time we got real rain. I feel good that I had a part in forcing the city to spend $20 million, expensive but it's a great natural area and it feeds into the James river. Toxic fish are expensive too. We even have Bald Eagles again here. Last Edited by FlashBuzzkill on 08/03/2018 02:25 PM Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America. |
