Vitamin K2 deficiencies can set the stage for fatal heart disease

Vitamin K, essential for the proper clotting of blood and maintaining of bone density, exists in two forms: vitamin K1 – also known as phylloquinone – and Vitamin K2, or menaquinone. Vitamin K2, in turn, has different forms that have been used in studies – with the MK-4 and MK-7 forms most commonly utilized.

Research has shown that vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 perform different functions. K1 plays a key role in blood clotting and coagulation, while K2 helps to regulate the levels and location of calcium in the body.

Interesting to note: Low levels of K2 are linked with increased risk of atherosclerosis – the buildup of calcium-containing plaque in the arteries. And, as we know, calcified arteries greatly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, heart attack, dementia and premature death.

This is where vitamin K2 can come to the rescue.

High-dose vitamin K can block harmful calcium infiltration

Both animal and clinical studies have shown vitamin K’s beneficial effects on arteries.

Researchers have discovered that vitamin K2 helps block calcification and arterial sclerosis by binding to calcium – thereby enhancing the body’s ability to store calcium in the bones and keeping it from infiltrating soft tissues and arteries.

In one study, daily consumption of more than 32 micrograms of dietary vitamin K2 reduced the risk of arterial calcification and death from heart disease – by an incredible 50 percent.

An additional observational study confirmed the potentially lifesaving effects of vitamin K2. The research showed that participants with the highest intake of vitamin K2 were 52 percent less likely to develop calcification of the arteries. They were also 57 percent less likely to die from heart disease over a 7 to 10 year interval.

In fact, scientists have even worked out a formula identifying the benefits of K2. For every 10 micrograms of vitamin K2 ingested, there is a 9 percent reduction in the risk of heart disease.

More good news: High dose vitamin K2 can help reverse arterial stiffness

One of the dangers of arterial calcification is that it causes arteries to become stiff and brittle, making it harder for the heart to pump blood – and raising blood pressure. In addition to preventing this condition, vitamin K2 may even be able to help reverse it.

Vitamin K3 is made in the intestine from Vitamin K1 and converts K1 to K2.

I was actually involved in a 5 year study of Menaquinone a few years back, there were no appreciable effect in me. That being said I already had health issues prior to trials, so all I can attest to is that things are worse, I even have to take a thinner now and I have AVN in both hips and because of my health surgery is not an option.

Buying supplements is generally a waste of time. There is no magic health bullet. Every nutrient, vitamin and mineral can be pitched as a magic elixer. Magic elixers don't exist.isolated substances generally don't do diddly squat to change anything in people's bodies. If you want change you should look into revamping your entire lifestyle, including your diet

I take Vitamin D3 (10,000iu) by ‘Healthy Origins’ and Super K by ‘Life Extension’ every other day.

Inexpensive and very good quality imo.

Look to Magnesium caps (500mg) by ‘Life Extension’ as well.

Those are 3 of my most important staples in my supplement arsenal hf

Is a few years ago now, but were threads on here, a leading heart surgeon(and others in the field) saying, and showing that heart disease (and related health issues) all were due to inflammation, every single case.

If you're healthy and want to avoid developing heart problems and other issues associated with Vitamin K deficiency in the future, 138 micrograms daily should be enough.

If you already have heart problems or other problems associated with Vitamin K deficiency 200 micrograms should be enough.

You can get 141.75 mcg Vitamin K from 7/8 of a cup boiled broccoli, (7/8 of a cup once it is boiled/cooked), and 203.5 micrograms from 1 + 1/4 cup boiled broccoli. Make sure the broccoli is cooked/boiled because raw broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables when raw contain goitrogens which can interfere with the function of the thyroid gland once a certain amount is consumed, the goitrogens are deactivated by cooking. Also make sure the broccoli is organic and the water you're cooking it in is purified.

It would be a better idea to get Vitamin k from food as opposed to supplements, but as long as any supplement doesn't contain any extra unhealthful ingredients (chemical fillers, cane sugar, partially hydrogenated oils, vegetable oil, etc), is organic, and the Vitamin K isn't from soy, it should be ok to take.

The only food source of direct Vitamin K2 in high/significant amounts is Natto (made from soy) so it is better to just get Vitamin K from Vitamin K1 sources.

You can also get Vitamin K1 from boiled spinach (222.5 mcg per 1/4 cup boiled), boiled kale (143.375 mcg per 1/8 cup boiled, 286.75 per 1/4 cup), boiled brussels sprouts (150 mcg per 1/2 cup boiled, 200 mcg per 2/3 cup boiled), and pickles (73 mcg per pickle). Any food source you choose for Vitamin K should be organic and any water used for boiling should be purified water. Ideally for optimum health one should only be eating organic and drinking/cooking with purified water.

Vit K2 found in Egg yolks and Cheese. I would advise people to try to get their nutrients in food rather than synthetic pills. Dont take vitamins, BUT do take nutrients in capsule form such as Turmeric, Fish Oil, Mg etc,,, I take Camu Camu capsules for the Vit C.

You would need to have 7 ounces/700 calories of Gouda cheese to get enough Vitamin K2 daily. This! Green leafy vegetables are also a good source of Vit K. One should always get their vitamins through food. Synthetic vitamins can cause illness and cancer.

Worth opening this topic up again.

Recent testing in 2017 with very accurate test methods shows finally that dairy products like soft cheeses, whole milk and especially heaving whipping cream have easily enough K2 vitamin to get all you need every day. Zero need for veggies. Just 3 ounces of heavy whipping cream is almost 700 micrograms a day! So how did this get missed all these years????

Sounds like somebody did not want the world to know that "DAIRY" without the fat removed can actually be "crucial" for good heart health. Even the main saturated fatty acid "Stearic" acid is now testing out good for heart health.

Whenever a vegetarian tells you to eat you veggies to get that life saving K1, just tell them to guzzle that fatty oh so good tasting heavy whipping cream for a much better large dose of K2.
