Repentance - A Deeper Look - Definition of "Repent" & The Importance of Repentance
POLL: Have you repented / do you repent?
 Yes and continue to
 Yes once is enough
 No
 I should but haven't yet
 Not needed
 Blank (View Results)

3 steps to repentenance.

1. Admit your sin(s).
2. Ask forgiveness
3. Stop that sin(s)

Jesus' very first teaching was to "repent".

Matthew 4:17 (KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mark 1:15 And saying*, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe* the gospel.

The message of Jesus' ministry was so important that the Father had John the Baptist "rattle their cages" ahead of time to "pave the way" for Jesus' ministry.

The key teaching by John the Baptist?

Matthew 3:2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Some folks like to reduce the word "repent" to mean "turn away" etc...like this website does.

[link to loveintruth.com]

They like to use Jeremiah and other prophet's usage of the word as examples.

But if you take a closer look at the usage of it in other places, and in context of it's usage, it's a lot more complicated.

The nope word shûb (pronounced shoove) occurs 1058 times in the Old Testament.

Here's various Old Testament verses showing varying contexts.

Notice that in a couple of places that the words "grieved" or "sorrowed" could be used.

Genesis 6

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.

Exodus 13

17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt:

Exodus 32

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.
13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.
14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

Numbers 23

19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

Deuteronomy 32

36 For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

Judges 2

18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.

Judges 21

6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in nopes of Israel.

1 Samuel 15

11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

28 And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

2 Samuel 24

16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

Here, "repent" is used along with "make supplication" and acknowdgement of sin.

1 Kings 8

46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;
47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;

David mentions acknowledgement and confession in the Psalms.

Psalm 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

Simply "turning away" leaves a lot of room for pridefullness and arrogance.

It also lacks any fear / love of God, nor humbleness or remorsefullness.

Finally, Jesus didn't even bother to mention it in His Lord's Prayer.

Instead, He states to "ask forgiveness".

Matthew 6

9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Luke 11

1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

3 Give us day by day our daily bread.

4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Re: Repentance - A Deeper Look - Definition of "Repent" & The Importance of Repentance
We should continually be in a state of repentance. It is not a one time thing, as we are all failed human beings. We goof up every day, by thought, word, or deed. Whether it is just looking at someone who does not look like us, and silently judging them, or doing something really bad, it is all sin in God's eye, and we must acknowledge this, and repent of our shortcomings. We must try to do better every day, which is not easy.
Above all, we must thank God every day, all during the day, for His Love and Mercy towards us.Even when things are not going too good, we must still thank Him. Out of the darkness comes the light, the light of our Salvation.

Agree with others that repentance is a constant state. Today I was reading the bible story of how David had to repent after Bathsheba.

Really good post and one that needs to be talked about.

The title of this short video is deceptive.

He doesn't really refute the sinner's prayer, but points out the necessity of repentance.

I believe that 'Repent' means to turn back or turn around. First of all, this is not purely a Christian thing, it is experienced by believers, atheists and others alike! It goes something like this - we first realize our mistake, second, we learn from it and third, we vow to never repeat it! This may sound easy but it is not necessarily the case!

Eg. You overindulge in drinking too much alcohol and end up with the worst hangover that you have ever had! You can't avoid the hangover because it is the effect brought about by a cause, 'overindulgence' but you do recognize the cause and realize your mistake because you are now suffering from its effects! That's number one and two on the list. Learning your lesson and then being determined to never repeat it again is number three!

This eg. is basically what repentance is, and you may be absolutely genuine in your determination to NEVER repeat the same mistake - but who among us, who, having experienced this scenario, actually carry through with the determination to never repeat the overindulgence again? I would say that there are very few and that's where Grace comes in - it gives us the space to learn from our 'repeated', mistakes, time and time again until we overcome and actually NEVER repeat the overindulgance which brought about the hangover!

At the time - our repentance was absolutely genuine, so the first two points are covered, but invariably, we will most probably find ourselves stumbling again and again until either it kills us or we actually overcome it, this is number three on the list!

It's immaterial how many times we fall but it's how many times that we get up that matters!

Jesus Christ is the only way to Salvation.
1 Corinthians 1611 AV KJ Bible
Chapter 15
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Re: Repentance - A Deeper Look - Definition of "Repent" & The Importance of Repentance
John 3:16 is THE basis for Faith / Belief. It requires total acceptance that God exists, that He sent His Son, and that you believe that Jesus IS the Son of God.

That's not the ONLY thing that get's you Saved though.

The other is repentenance. Check this out

Old Testament - God constantly has prophets tell His people to Repent to be forgiven.
New Testament Gospels - What did John the Baptist and Jesus first teach? Repent

Four stories in the Bible show us that folks from the OT WERE being saved.

1. Enoch was "taken"
2. Elijah was taken...then appeared at Jesus transfiguration (Matthew 17:3 & Luke 9:30)
3. Moses appeared at Jesus transfiguration
4. The story told by Jesus (in Luke 16:19-31) about Abraham, Lazarus, and the rich man who had died.

The keys to the OT folks?
They Believed in God
They repented

Jesus very first teachings....

Matthew 4:17 (KJV) From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mark 1:15 And saying*, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe* the gospel.

It was also a key teaching by John the Baptist

Matthew 3:2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!"

Repentance worded differently

Isaiah 1

16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

18 Come now, and let us reason together,
saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword:
for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

Re: Repentance - A Deeper Look - Definition of "Repent" & The Importance of Repentance
Repentance is a continuum because the very Greek word metanoia implies a continued activity of "regaining one's right state of mind in right consciousness". In fact, it actually has little to do with being "sorry". Being "sorry" might lead to a start of metanoia, but metanoia itself is a lifestyle of reunifying with holistic consciousness in Christ. In fact, it is the antithesis of paranoia, which means being beside oneself. Metanoia is being one's true self as God intended. It is the constant path of renewing the nous, the mind.

Belief isn't a one time act, but a lifestyle. And so is metanoia.

All the "things" we do, or want to do, that lead to death, slavery, misery, or ill health for anyone---those "things" are generally defined as "sins."

But if we still remain in your carnal "self", rather than gradually transforming to our "spiritual" self, we may not even recognize these actions or intents as sin.

Repent means " to change"

The Lord's Prayer states "forgive us". Asking forgiveness means you are sorrowful for what you did / said.

Matthew 6

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:

15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

This includes what Paul had to say about repentance.

I've repented in the sense of turning from sin, but I can't make myself regret.

Re: Repentance - A Deeper Look - Definition of "Repent" & The Importance of Repentance

The Hebrew word shûb (pronounced shoove) occurs 1058 times in the Old Testament.

15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

1 Kings 8

46 If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;
47 Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;

We "regret" actions or inactions.

We repent of the sin if we realize that sin was the cause of the action.

The same "action" can be a result of sin or of virtue. Knowing the cause of the action is imperative to judge it.

Repent and believe the gospel. That is, repent of your unbelief. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved - Acts 16:31. If you don’t believe in God why would you ever repent? But having believed in the Gospel leads to repentance of sin. Unbelief is the mother of all the other sins of man.

Repent means " to change"

That’s how I see it. Not fair to just keep doing wrong and then asking for forgiveness.
