You must be older, like me. Gosh, when I was a girl Scarlet Fever was talked about like it was nearly a death sentence. This is why I'm shocked that it's even a thing today, because I haven't heard about Scarlet Fever for DECADES.

These days it's taken care of with antibiotics. If I do have strep in my system, then after 24 hrs I'm no longer contagious, and after the 'script is gone, then no problem whatsoever. The same with my son's girlfriend, the one with Scarlet Fever.

It's really not as terrifying anymore....hf

My son's girlfriend was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever, not me. I was just exposed.

I went to the doc, my fever was elevated, and my glands were minorly swollen, the right one minorly sore. I do not have a rash.

My son's girlfriend's docs tested her for strep, she was positive. The rash she has is clearly the same rash as Scarlet Fever.

There's no misdiagnosis going on in her case. I'm taking antibiotics just in case....but the fever and swelling glands doesn't look good.

Given I'm already on antibiotics right outta the gate I most likely won't develop Scarlet Fever.

I really do feel okay, you guys....I'm just a bit shocked that Scarlet Fever is now growing to be a thing again.

You're okay, lovey. It takes a lot more than a rash to scare me.

Now, tell me I might have another bowel obstruction - after having nine earlier this year, and one surgery - and then you'll see me FREAK OUT.

Harhar, a little fever and cranky glands ain't NOTHING....chuckle

wow.

this is frightening.

 Quoting: MissCleo

The only thing that scared me was the possibility of giving it to one of my clients. The first person I called was my boss, to tell her I was headed to the clinic, and that I was likely going to have to miss some work. She was as shocked as I was.

You see, I work with people who some have compromised immune systems, and my regular client has a nine month old baby. I'd rather stay at home, not making money, than to perhaps expose one of them to something like this.

The doc told me after 24 hrs. of the antibiotic, then I'm not contagious.

I dunno, I'm still just shakin' my head with disbelief.

Interestingly enough, Scarlet Fever has actually been on a rise, and the medical professionals don't know why. I read that in the last link I posted.

Hmmmm, I wonder if that has to do with antibiotic resistance....but I would think they would know that was the reason if it were so. Or at least so one would think.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

CG, I hope you do not actually get this full on. It's very, very, tough.

Also, can you tell us roughly geographically where you are located?

Our daughter had a sore throat all last week. Turns out it was tonsillitis, but things can build when the immune system is weakened.

Also, I have never heard 24 hours on an antibiotic makes you no longer contagious. Always 48 hours from what I have seen. What did they put you on? Again, if you don't mind. If you do-feel entirely free to ignore me!

Awww, I would never ignore you...at least not purposefully....hf

Me and my son's girlfriend are both taking 875 mg amoxicillin, for ten days...heh, that ought to right out knock the snot outta anything strep.

I questioned my doc again about the 24 hr gig, two time during my visit, but she said for sure that after 24 hrs I would not be contagious. She said I may exhibit symptoms of strep throat, but that I wouldn't be contagious. I also saw the same on the Internet when I checked after I got home, so I dunno...I'm apt to believe them. I did make it very clear to her that I can't be working if contagious due to my clientele.

I'm in Altap dancerordo, NM and my son's girlfriend is in Cloudcroft, NM.

EDIT: For some reason GLP censors the name of the town I live in...but I'm not far from White Sands National Monument, to give you an idea of what town I live in. It's the only one close to the monument.

From what I saw on a map of sickness nationwide, New Mexico is in the thick of it right now....but I don't think that has anything to do with this. I think that's a virus they're talking about.

Yup, just like the title says, believe it or not, I've been exposed to Scarlet Fever....gaah

My son and his girlfriend came over yesterday and she had a rash all over her body. She told me it was a heat rash...but it didn't look like any heat rash I've ever seen.

Still, what did I do....like a doo-doo head? I drank off the same glass as her.

I mean, c'mon, who barely even knows what Scarlet Fever is anymore, it's so uncommon.

So, she calls me this morning and tells me she woke up with a fever of 104 and was puking, so she went to the doctor....aaaannnd, she's got Scarlet Fever.

Because of my job I had to call my primary care doc and they told me to right away go to an emergent care clinic to get tested, and to get a 'script for antibiotics.

I get to the clinic and my temp is elevated by two degrees and my glands are just starting to f'n swell and be sore. Heh, I got the 'script. I just took two tylenol to get the fever down a bit.

Can't go back to work until Friday, maybe longer if I'm sick, but I won't be contagious anymore by Friday morning when I have a work run.

I swear to Gawd, harhar, how does this happen?....I mean, there's only about 20,000 cases of Scarlet Fever a year, and I got exposed?

Christ on a cracker, life is full of surprises!

Yeah, my son's girlfriend was telling me she wasn't contagious...heh, I didn't think it wasn't and looked it up. It's contagious as all get out.

The clinic doc thought it was a little fast for me to have a fever and swelling glands after just being exposed yesterday, but she wrote me a 'script and said regardless that just because I had been exposed she would've given me a 'script anyway.

This is just too much, and I keep laughing...what are the odds? Dang.
 Quoting: cosmicgypsy

Aww Cosmic!

I hope that you feel better soon and I am GLAD that you went to the doctor and got an antibiotic. Scarlet Fever can damage the heart if left untreated...turns into rheumatic fever.

KEEP an EYE on this and if you do not get better, let your doctor know.

I had it in the 50's. Sick, sick, sick. In bed for days with high fever. So high that the skin blistered on the bottom of my feet and I actually peeled the skin off my foot bottoms, just like a severe sunburn peels.

I was left with heart valve damage. Dental visits? Antibiotics every time.

. Scarlet Fever is serious stuff.

So far, so good. He's probably got a stronger immune system than his girlfriend.

I think she's probably had this strep in her for awhile now, and she's been fighting it off, but finally it caught up with her. She's told me she hasn't felt at all good since she had an UTI a few months ago.

I'm actually kinda surprised I had a fever and my glands were a little swollen when I went to the doc. I take so many top shelf supplements, it's hard to believe anything ornery could live in me, harhar.

The antibiotics will kick this, though, for both her and I. If my son gets sick, he'll get antibiotics, too.

Oh, I don't think I'm going to develop Scarlet Fever, but I was exposed.

The doc I saw today didn't even test me, she said it was too soon. The fever and glands, though...that did look suspicious, and strep can start to develop within one day.

Given my job - I drive medicaid patients to their out of town appts, and my regular client has a baby - I would've been given antibiotics whether I had a fever or not. Some of my clients are very ill and have compromised immune systems.

I'll tell ya, I don't at all like taking antibiotics, and I'll usually suffer before taking them, but not this time. I told the doc I would've begged her for some if she hadn't of offered up right away.

There is no way in hell I would even take a chance of getting one of my clients sick. No way. I would have to be off work way longer if I didn't take the antibiotics, and I'm not down with that either.

I had scarlet fever back in 1989. I was young, still a kid, 9 years old. Worst fucking thing I've ever experienced.

I've suffered through lyme disease in 2016 and still am, and I experienced cold turkey heroin withdrawl 5 years ago.

None of that comes close to as sick as I was with scarlet fever. I got it on my birthday, and my great-uncle died that day, who I was fairly close with. I was so sick I couldn't go to his funeral. It's a memory that almost 30 years later will not go away. I hope you don't get that shit like I did

Yeah, my son's girlfriend says she's been not feeling well for a few months. It started with an UTI for her. I guess it was way worse back in the day, like when you had it.

At least she's been correctly diagnosed - kinda hard to miss the full body rash - and she's now on the correct antibiotics to wipe it out.

And at least I'm not as hot now....charlie

How is your son doing.....any symptoms with him?

Ok...never mind. I see someone else asked same question. I hope your sons's girlfriend stays home & away from people so she doesn't pass it on to anyone else. Does she have any idea where she may have contracted it?

I think the UTI she had was cultured for strep, and that was a few months ago. They tested her urine again this morning, but it was clear. She did test positive for strep, I think from a throat swab. She told me today that she's never even had a sore throat. From what I read today - if I remember correctly - there's a particular strain or type of strep bacteria that produces Scarlet Fever. It was some scientific strep name that was a Type A.

I dunno, maybe that's why Scarlet Fever is contagious, because of this particular strep type...or it could be a secondary symptom. All I know is I'm treating for it, gladly, and I otherwise have a healthy fear-respect for antibiotics. They can be used too much.

She's also staying home. I think she has a five day work excuse, though. She's a sick puppy. She woke up with a fever of 104 (!!!) this morning, and she was tossin' her cookies. They stopped by briefly after the doctor to pick up a bottle of probiotics I have. Her doc told her to get some, and take them. So did the doc I saw this afternoon, but I take very good probiotics already, I just have to watch when I take them now...not too close to taking the antibiotic.

Harhar, what a freak show...antibiotics and probiotics. What a world. Of duality....rolleyes

And, yes, I know the probiotics are prescribed because the antibiotics are going to tear up my good stomach flora. Uhg, I am likely to have the runs here within the next day or two, and that'll last the remainder of the time. I really, REALLY don't like taking antibiotics.
