Documenting internet censorship
POLL: Is it worth building
 Yes - build it
 No - you're a dipshit
 Blank (View Results)

So I bought a domain a while back that could be used to start documenting instances of internet censorship.

The idea is anyone could anonymously submit evidence of censorship they experience or witness. Then others could anonymously 'upvote' to corroborate that the censorship indeed occurred.

If it became popular enough, over time statistics about which platforms censored what and who could be tabulated. Perhaps enough to prove there is a deliberate attempt to censor conservatives, but it would be open to all voices conservative or not.

What do you guys think? Is it worth my time and effort to build it?

Tools are useful for long term documentation. Reminds me of those web sites that keep track of what promises Trump has kept so far in his 1st term, and which ones he hasn't completed yet.

But this would be a bit more crowd sourced...

But as long as there is a decent gate keeper to make sure exaggerations are not getting through, it should be very useful.

Yes, but there's also a good story behind why I changed it. It's for mostly personal reasons. If you're interested, PM me and I'll share it.

The idea would involve various forms of checks to ensure no-one is 'upvoting' more than once, spam detection, etc. All of those tools I've already explored through various other projects I've experimented with, so I think I can pull it off while still keeping submissions and votes anonymous. I think leaving it to the community/crowd sourcing it, can be practical and accurate.

LOL - I gave the 'dipshit' part to the trolls. But if you don't think it's feasible, that's okay too.

I agree it would be a massive undertaking if it became popular enough.

I've already looked into many of the pitfalls. I know the right webhost, the right ddos protection; I have a slew of tools to make sure posters are legit and votes aren't fake (as best as those tools can provide, anyway).

I don't have a lot of money or anything like that, but I can market it to the right people if it becomes more I can bear on my own. 501.3(C) is a possibility, too. Who knows.

Re: Documenting internet censorship
It would be an interesting study in social dynamics, but I think it's going to be a lot more complex than you think, beginning with, what is your definition of "censorship?"

For instance, are you limiting the scope to examples of accounts being deleted? What about post moderation where profanity is automatically detected and altered? What about autobans on GLP?

And once you define it, verification of every submitted instance of censorship based on that definition will take manpower you don't have, unless you have some amazing algorithm for automatic verification.

And taking it one step further, if I were to submit something that I think is an example of censorship, but it doesn't meet your criteria and my post is rejected, isn't that a form of censorship in itself?

If you decide to do it I would love to monitor the site and the results. I think it would be fascinating. But I'm not sure you realize the scope of work you are setting yourself up for.

Good luck!

One site I am watching can't figure out how to rewrite a story from the 70's. I think they should let his daughter write what she thinks would be the ending she wants people to read about her dad in history.
She knows him, how would she like him seen? Its easier to use a mirror than a scalpel but sometimes the mirror hurts more.
