Ebola OUTBREAK: Death toll SOARS to 55 as authorities announce crisis plan (Page2)

New outbreak has been confirmed:

Two more people have died from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo's latest outbreak in North Kivu province, the country's Health Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

That brings the total number of deaths in the latest outbreak to 36, according to the Health Ministry.
On Tuesday, the World Health Organization confirmed that the latest cases in Congo's North Kivu province are part of the Zaire strain of the virus and that there is no link to a separate outbreak, which occurred in the western Equateur province that has since been declared over.
"It's good news and it's very bad news," WHO Deputy Director-General for Emergency Preparedness and Response Peter Salama told journalists in Geneva, after the new cases were first confirmed.

Furthermore, immunizations have begun:

The vaccinations have begun just one week after the announcement of a second outbreak of Ebola this year in the country. A total of 44 cases have been reported so far, of which 17 have been confirmed.

Video (from 3 years ago) about how bad it looked in that outbreak:

"Armed groups, dense populations and mass displacement make Congo's latest deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus more challenging than ever to contain, the World Health Organization's chief said Friday.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke after vaccinations began this week, with support from a UN peacekeeping mission, in Congo's restive northeast where multiple rebel groups pose a threat and a heavily travelled border with Uganda is nearby.

Tedros and Congo's health minister on Saturday planned to visit the village where the latest outbreak, Congo's 10th, was declared on Aug. 1. The ministry says 44 cases have been reported, 17 of them confirmed as Ebola, including 10 deaths...."

Doctor discusses ebola crisis:

On Tuesday 24 July, I thought that we were finally done with Ebola. After more than 80 days of struggle against the epidemic affecting the Equateur Province in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Government announced the end of the epidemic. Thanks to the mobilisation of all parties, we were able to bring together the communities and lead them to adopt preventive behaviours that allowed us to stop the propagation of the epidemic.

On this day, we were all relieved to be able to say that the children were safe and sheltered from the epidemic. We had started to implement a post-Ebola transition plan that was going to last for 3 months, after which we would finally be able to resume our daily work. However, Ebola decided otherwise: exactly one week after the announcement of the end of the epidemic in the Equateur Province, the Government announced that the country was facing a new epidemic, the tenth since 1796.

I am with you OP. With all the conditions listed above this could be a real threat. The interesting part of this is that the virus tested Ebola Zaire, rather than the Sudan Ebola virus, or other types that appear in that location. Makes you wonder if someone travelled outside of the previous outbreak and has carried it into its current location. Incubation period is long so it is possible. The cynic in me thinks something else going going onm . Sure gives them ample opportunity to test the new vaccines

I think of how with conflict, fewer people will seek medical attention to avoid being shot, for instance. Or of a raid where a sick house is contacted unawares. I think there are several scenarios that could go all wrong. I think the next month will reveal much.

Symptoms of Ebola virus disease. The incubation period, that is, the time interval from infection with the virus to onset of symptoms is 2 to 21 days. Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms. First symptoms are the sudden onset of fever fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.

Yet, it might NOT stay there and stay contained. Yes, it pops up nearly yearly and yes it is of grave concern when it does no matter how small the outbreaks. If it crosses borders, reaches large cities, gets into the airport system it's going to spell disaster. Don't be so blase' about such things. If they need money to combat it, I hope they get it.

The WHO is concerned that the area’s high population density – in contrast to sparsely populated Equateur Province where a previous outbreak of Ebola in the DRC was contained earlier this year – further complicates efforts to fight the virus.

So...the news is growing worse.

Ebola outbreak shaping up as most dangerous test of world’s ability to respond since global crisis

The latest Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is shaping up to be the most dangerous and difficult test of the world’s ability to contain the disease since the catastrophic West African outbreak in 2014 and 2015.

Like an outbreak earlier this year, in the western part of the country, cases have been reported across multiple locations, disease transmission is taking place in cities where hundreds of thousands of people live, and there’s the potential for the virus to spread across several international borders....

At least 1,500 people may have been exposed to deadly Ebola virus in the Congo, says WHO, as it warns situation could deteriorate as aid workers are unable to reach 'no-go' areas
Ebola has hit Congo, in central Africa, hard in recent weeks, particularly in the eastern region of Beni
The World Health Organization said at least 1,500 people had potentially been exposed to the virus
So far, 44 people have died after falling ill and 78 people have been confirmed as infected
Doctors are isolating victims in secure units made by the Alliance for International Medical Action
They are being used for the first time in an effort to stem the outbreak in an area also ravaged by war

""We don't know if we are having all transmission chains identified. We expect to see more cases as a result of earlier infections and infection developing into illness," Jasarevic reportedly said. "We still don't have a full epidemiological picture. ... The worst-case scenario is that we have these security blind spots where the epidemic could take hold that we don't know about," the wire service quoted him as saying."

Health care workers getting hit hard...

[link to www.who.int]

The 78 confirmed or probable cases reside in five health zones in North Kivu and one health zone in Ituri. The majority of cases (39 confirmed and 21 probable) have been reported from Mangina in Mabalako Health Zone (Figure 1). As of 15 August, 24 suspected cases are currently pending laboratory testing to confirm or exclude EVD.

Eight new confirmed cases among health care workers have been reported, bringing the total number of infected health care workers to 10 (nine confirmed and one probable deceased case)

On 1 Aug [2018], Beni declared an outbreak of Ebola epicentered in Mangina -- a small town that had been a relative haven from the fighting -- where 6 members of the same family died of the disease.

"I fled here from Kokola, where the ADF were committing atrocities," said Pascaline Fitina, a 36-year-old woman, sitting alone, her head in her hands. "I went to my elder sister, but she has died of Ebola and her husband is being quarantined at the treatment centre. I don't what to do."

Pascal Lukula, a 38-year-old farmer with 5 children, said he was stuck in Mangina, unable to get to other members of his family because of the encroaching militia. "We are caught between the hammer and the anvil," he sighed. "The ADF's on one side, and Ebola on the other."

For those who don't knoow, this outbreak likely has the greatest chance for regional and global spread. Like all viruses, whether from nature, or man made, they change, in their ability to spread, virulence, and other factors. Features of a previous outbreak do not determine future outbreaks as they are subject to change....always. Sometimes subtle, other times more DRASTIC.

Point IS..this is the first known Ebola outbreak in a warzone... An area difficult to reach, and where infected people are likely to try and escape. Other Ebola doom may have failed, but this my friends is much different.

You're very correct. Fewer people can go to seek help that may or may not even be available...for the reasons stated above (health workers won't risk going in). It's something we ALL need to be keeping an eye on, as quickly as it spreads...and also the SO LONG incubation period.

The outbreak is the 10th to strike the DRC since 1976, when Ebola was first identified and named after a river in the north of the country.
The previous nine were completely contained and there is no reason to think that the tenth will not be .
So hardly very interesting news unless you live in the DNC .
